PLAYMAKER Pillar #2: Leadership (Self) Love

PLAYMAKER Pillar #2: Leadership (Self) Love

Psychological Safety is all the rave right now and rightfully so, based on what we have faced over the past few years.?

As a leader, you are called to provide psychological safety for your team, peers, and customers.

But what happens when you are the one that needs it?

The truth is, If you’re a mess, your team will be a mess (so will your customers, peers, family etc.). It’s contagious!

Now is the time to stop trying to cultivate psychological safety and inspire work/life balance for your others while suppressing your own emotions and recklessly overworking just to the edge of burnout.

Two facts that leaders must know:?

There is no such thing as team-care without self-care.?

And,

Work-life and personal life affect one another. Mainly because you are just one person… it’s impossible for them not to overlap.

That’s why the second P(l)aymaker Pillar is all about knowing your own Leadership (self) Love Language.

In the first part of this series, I shared a recent personal health challenge that affected every other area of my life: a breast cancer diagnosis. Since I’m huge into connecting life lessons with leadership lessons here’s a lesson around Leadership (self) Love that I gleaned while navigating that experience. It’s simple but not always easy. I know it will serve you.?

1st thing I did: Reconsidered what was facts vs. what was fake news. It was a new diagnosis. I didn't know anything until the test results came back so relentlessly “what if-ing” myself, was not practicing self-love. Instead, I was very transparent in every trusted circle of peers, friends, and family. I embraced and accepted my fears versus running from them. I started sorting them into what was #facts vs #fakenews. I stopped MSU (making sh*t up– BIG shout out to @JennBarley and @KarenSullivan for that strategy). I focused on what I knew instead of what I didn’t want to happen and I asked for help as I navigated the situation. #onmySHIFT

Your leadership takeaway: When change and challenges arise don’t MSU (make stuff up). Instead, step into your A-game:

Ask for help and perspective from those you trust.?

Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings versus defaulting to fight, flight, or fawn.

Accept that change is constant and dig back into your toolbelt of all the changes and challenges you have successfully navigated in the past. - It’s your proof that You’ve Got This!
