Playground Mathematics for #STEMmommies

Aristotle defined mathematics as "the science of quantity.” Understanding mathematics is important part of early childhood education. Making learning fun is key to long term success. But how can you make math fun for your toddlers?

The next time you take your toddler to the playground - don’t forget about these three simple ways to sneak in education on the fundamentals of mathematics:

  • Addition combines two numbers into a single number- counting steps leading up to a slide out loud is a simple ways to explain addition.
  • Taking steps backwards- is a way to explain subtraction.
  • Geometry is based on shape, size, and position of figures. You can point out geometrical shapes to your child like lines of the monkey bars, the circle of a merry go round and triangles formed by the base of swings.

Speaking of triangles....When you find triangles - define them further by their type:

  • Equilateral Triangle: all 3 sides are equal.
  • Scalene Triangle: none of the sides are equal.
  • Isosceles Triangle: at least 2 sides are equal.
