FUNDING POINT – PLAYER POSITIONS – COMMUNITY BUILDING

It is common within an organization or association to group participants into two categories: leaders and members. This top-down, two-tier power hierarchy may not best serve a community.

?I frequently work with a new business or project where typical roles and responsibilities may not apply, or the initial roles shift so dramatically during the startup phase that they require continuing definition. This presents the challenge of beginning with a blank slate and ‘inventing a new game’ where each player’s position must be defined, accountability for roles and responsibilities must be established, and participation must be recruited.

?Within a community, there are several actions that a member may take that benefit one or more other members of the community.

?Connector: This action occurs when a member introduces one member to another, enabling the formation of direct relationships between the introduced members.

?Advisor—This action occurs when a member shares knowledge with another member, improving the recipient's capabilities.

?Curator: This action occurs when a member obtains information, assesses information that may be of value, and shares that information with another member.

?Investor: This action occurs when a member makes resources available to another member in the form of money, time, or other assets.

?Leader: This action occurs when a member supports the coordination, communication, or management of the community or an individual project of the community.

?Educator: This action occurs when a member participates in the development and sharing of best practices that may be relevant to membership in the community or participation in a community project.

?There may be additional positions.

?A member may act in one or more of these positions. The willingness of a member to perform a function may change over time.

?In building a community, it is necessary to set goals and determine the resources needed to attain them. This assessment will aid in determining what activities members must perform. This work should involve a risk/reward analysis of the benefit that a member may attain from the performance of the activity. Any situation where the member's work exceeds the benefit may limit participation.

?COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY

On Monday, I presented as a guest lecturer at Colorado State University’s MBA course on Raising Capital in the Agricultural Sector – AREC 518. I walked through the basics of raising funding using a proposed application of cold plasma disinfection technology to address avian flu with a more in-depth discussion of investment crowdfunding offering designs.

This growing group of MBA courses in agriculture and entrepreneurship is being presented at the new CSU Spur facilities in the revitalized Denver Western Stock Show complex. Students are tasked with designing their own businesses that include savory frozen pocket meals, protein snacks, liquid disinfection, and chickens.

Prior to the course, Greg Graff gave me a tour of the facilities, which include small animal and equine veterinary centers, water treatment, commercial kitchens, a variety of plant and biological labs, and research centers that house State of Colorado offices, community programs, and set the table for more urban farming in the future.

?DON COHEN SHOW

I was guest today on Don Cohen’s show along with Kelle Steineke where we discussed ‘consistency’. We talked about the value of showing up all the time and how that effort and investment is viewed by the people around us.

Don is an expert on LinkedIn, particularly on the use of Live streaming to build brands and communities.

All shows where I have been a guest can be viewed on Don Cohen's LinkedIn page under Posts.

Absolutely agree! Building a strong community is like weaving a tapestry - every thread adds to the strength and beauty. Elon Musk once implied the importance of taking risks for the greater good. Let’s invest our efforts in nurturing small businesses. They are not just the backbone of our economy but the heart of our communities. ???? #communitystrength
