Play to Your Strengths

Employers often ask "What are your strengths?" in interviews. But do job seekers know why this question is so important?

When I recently convened a discussion about Discovering Your Strengths (via the St. Matthias Employment Ministry job search support group in Somerset, NJ), I was pleased by the lively conversation. When I asked them what was one of their favorite skills to use, the answers included:

  • My Skills that continue to thrill me are in the Technical, Adobe Creative Suite, Learning HTML/CSS, Interactive Design and Animation.
  • Creating great environments for others to live a good life, with color and energy.
  • Putting things together creatively - campaigns, events, creative materials, etc
  • Helping people by getting them to think differently about their goals and themselves.
  • Former colleagues have called me a ‘rock’ for my ability to stay calm under pressure, my work ethic and my reliability.

Our strengths are skills of ours that we are especially good at, that we really enjoy using, that strengthen us when we use them because we feel happier, more energized, and at our best!

Our strengths are the secret ingredients to our personal brand recipe.

Job seekers must identify their strengths in order to communicate their unique value proposition to employers.

Terrence H. Seamon, I really applaud you for covering this topic. When the interviewer asks "what are your strengths?" he or she does not mean,...do you know what your strengths are and can you enumerate them. The real question is "can you share with me one or two stories THAT ARE RELEVANT TO MY NEEDS in a way that is not bragging and I (not you) can evaluate if you are really good at it and do it in an eloquent and succinct way. And do they believe you? I am certain that you will cover this.

You asked a great question, Terrence H. Seamon, that clearly generated an excellent discussion. knowing what they are and being able to articulate one's strengths can take some work, and it is well worth the effort in one's job search.

BRAVO, Terry! More insightful words to motivate and inspire!
