This week’s Mental Sunshine is something I think you’ll enjoy…
I’ve been reading about the benefits of play and playfulness.
As adults we’re always so serious, aren’t we?
Mortgage repayments; sensible clothes; interest rates; politics.
Yawn.
I mean, it’s all important stuff - but being serious all the time is the exact opposite of Mental Sunshine.
I think the opposite of this is to be playful.
Finding ways to be playful in life can help with stress relief and improve both mood and creativity. It can help our brain function and even productivity.
But more importantly, it can bring some Mental Sunshine into an otherwise dull day.
I don’t mean an afternoon sitting on the living room floor playing with Lego - though to be honest that does sound like fun!
Being playful is something we can bring into any activity.
Of course, if you have children or grandchildren it’s easy to just join in with their playfulness.
Children can find fun with very little help. They don’t need specific accessories or rules; they just find it.
Next time you’re in a supermarket or cafe, watch out to see how the children are entertaining themselves - that should give you some idea of how you could be more playful.
When was the last time you balanced on a wall or kerb?
Or made up a story for no reason?
Instead of going for a jog alone, you could have a short race against friends or family members.
Or my favourite: just be a bit silly from time to time, for no good reason.
Play is as important and beneficial for adults as for children.
We seem to opt for being sensible and boring as we grow up - but where’s the fun in that?
I say let’s all find ways to be more playful, and see if it doesn’t bring some Mental Sunshine into our lives!

4 小时前We forget the power of play as we move into adulthood. It's important to remember and embrace the inner child. That doesn't mean being childish, but showing appreciation for the fact that the child we once was, is still part of who we are today. Giving ourselves permission to play and have fun goes a long way in terms of expression and happiness. Nice post.
