Play Golf with World Record Holder and Tour Player David Carey, AKA Mr 57

 It’s 12 months since Ireland’s David Carey set the Alps Tour alight with a blistering 57 gross (11 under par) at Cervino GC, Breuil-Cervinia, Italy. A world record score in a Tour event.

Yes the course was short, but you still have to get it in the hole and after a first round 57 David kept his composure to shoot two 67s and secure a win in a play off after being tied at -13. Drama all the way!

I spoke to David recently and asked him whether or not he realized at the time he was on course for such a low score and possibly a world record. “Absolutely” he replied. “I was loving every minute. It was a mental triumph as much as anything”.

Typical of every golfer, David’s thoughts went to the makable putt he missed for a 56!

Over the past year David has posted a number of low scores but stringing them together is tough in a sport that’s the ultimate meritocracy.

It was fascinating talking to David about life on Tour and especially about the 57, how his playing partners reacted, the publicity that followed and the expectations it created.

Full of ambition for 2020/21 David is working on his game and securing sponsors.
