Play The Game
I’ve been thinking about rugby recently, probably because of the World Cup. I’ve found myself falling back in love with the game over the past few weeks, having become rather bored by the way rugby had gone at the highest level in recent years, with endless contact situations and breakdowns and one team prevailing eventually in a war of attrition.
You don't need to have played rugby to a high standard to understand the very special club that having played the game gives you membership of, and the indefinable bond that former players of the game have with each other. There is a look, an acknowledgement in the eyes when you meet someone who you discover has also played the game, an acknowledgement that, even if you were never on the same pitch, even in the same country, you have shared something.
