So many companies today are searching for plastic-free packaging. Inevitably, the question is, "What impact will our new package have on climate change/our environment, and can we transition to plastic-free packaging without compromising our product or the brand?"
As a packaging supplier, these questions have been present for us as well. Way before "Plastic-Free" was a "thing", we were on the hunt. We searched for packaging with little environmental impact, ease of transition, solid performance barriers, amazing package decoration opportunities, tamper evidence, etc..etc... It was overwhelming! So, as you can imagine, when we found the Aluminum solution, we were very excited! Learning more about aluminum and the role it can play in our sustainable packaging search proved super interesting.
Infinitely Recyclable
Aluminum is widely recycled, primarily because, most consumers don't question how, or if it can be recycled since we've been sucessfully recycling Aluminum cans for decades. In the United States, Aluminum cans are recycled at a rate of ~105,000 cans a minute. Yes, you read that correctly, ~105,000 (beverage) cans a minute. A recycling rate of almost 50 percent.?
The best fact, however, is that Aluminum is infinitely recyclable! As a result, 75% of the Aluminum produced continues to be in circulation. Oh and, when we use recycle aluminum (PCR: Post-Consumer Recycled material) we consume 90% less energy and 90% fewer emissions than with virgin material.
