PlantPrep is a new business started by Jordan Lees in July 2020. Not only do they offer healthy plant-based meal plans, but they have strong connection with community and strive to be known as a business driven with purpose.
Q: What made you come up with the idea for PlantPrep?
Jordan: Having been plant-based for 9 years now, this was the main motivator for me starting this business. I saw this market with large growth potential, as people are becoming more interested in plant-based meals and discovering the health benefits of plant-based eating. This emerging opportunity also aligned to my own ethics and beliefs, and I wanted to start a business with purpose over profit, something that can achieve a social good.
Q: What is your background? and what did you do before PlantPrep?
Jordan: Prior to starting PlantPrep, I was a physiotherapist and then continued my education and became a lawyer. I had a business in workplace ergonomics, which focused on ergonomic equipment. I sold this business to raise the capital I needed to start PlantPrep.
Q: What is PlantPrep’s purpose?
Jordan: Our purpose is to make it easy for everyone and anyone to thrive on a plant-based diet. I want the experience to be awesome!
Not only is our food delicious but it is also outstanding from a nutritional standpoint. I want people to explore the health benefits and positive environmental impacts that a plant-based diet has. Also, a big point for us is giving back, and for every order we receive we provide two meals to feed the homeless and impoverished people to ensure they receive healthy, nutritious meals. We do this at own expense, not factoring it into our profit margins.
Q: How did SilverChef help you start PlantPrep?
Jordan: Silverchef have been a great help! I came to this venture with some capital but anyone in hospitality knows how expensive it is to set up a food business.
Silverchef allowed me to reserve some of my capital, which enabled me to expand faster in the early days by spending that money on marketing and hiring the right staff, and keeping capital in our bank for cash flow.
I also was happy with the fact SilverChef are a BCORP certified business which embraces a philosophy of using business as force for good. In addition to that they also do a lot of great work globally with Opportunity international. These business initiatives link closely to my own ethics and beliefs.
