Plant Systems and Synthetic Biology ??

In this September Newsletter, we would like to present you our Plant Systems and Synthetic Biology section. This section of our journal Plants MDPI is devoted to publishing papers on all levels of plant systems and synthetic biology, which include, but are not limited to, the internal processes and external cues that control plant phenotypic traits, such as plant growth and development, as well as responses to the environment. It also welcomes papers on using synthetic biology, such as computational biology and genome editing, to study gene functions and engineer new plant phenotypic traits.

Both review and original research papers as well as application notes, computational tools, and resources and methods are published in this section.

In particular (but not exclusively), this section welcomes high-level manuscripts on the following topics:

  • Biofuel plants
  • Cell-cell interaction
  • Computational biology and bioinformatics
  • CRISPR/Cas
  • Engineered plant and transgenics
  • Gene network
  • Genome editing
  • High throughput sequencing, particularly on single-cell and chromosome sequencing
  • Machine learning in plant study
  • Medical plants
  • Omics (transcriptomics, epigenomics, degradomics, proteomics, and metabolomics)
  • Plant and environment interaction
  • Plant cell communication
  • Plant secondary metabolites
  • Synthetic Biology
  • TALENs
  • ZFNs??????

  • Meet our Section Editor-in-chief, Prof. Dr. Baohong Zhang!
  • Dr. Baohong Zhang is a well-known scientist and distinguished professor in the Department of Biology at East Carolina University (North Carolina, USA). Dr. Zhang received his bachelor’s degree in plant genetics and breeding at China Agricultural University and his Ph.D. in environmental toxicology at Texas Tech University.?
  • Dr. Zhang has been working in the field of genomics and biotechnology, including transgenic and genome editing, for more than 20 years, which are supported by federal funding agents (NSF, NIH, DoD, and USDA) and industries, such as North Carolina Biotechnology Center and DuPont. Dr. Zhang is frequently invited by international conferences to give plenary or keynote lectures. During his long and distinguished career, he has published 10 scientific books, including MicroRNAs in Stem Cell, and Transgenic Cotton, and published >200 papers in peer-reviewed international journals.
  • His papers have been cited more than 20,000 times; many of them were listed as highly cited papers by the ISI Web of Sciences. He is frequently invited to serve on grant reviewing panels, including NSF, USDA, DoE, and European Research Council Executive Agency.?
  • Dr. Zhang has won many prestigious awards, including not only the Cotton Researcher of the Year 2018 but also the Science/AAAS Excellence in Science (2006), ECU Five Year Research Achievement Award (2013), and THCAS Distinguished Professorship (2018). He has collaborated with more than 1,000 scientists from >20 countries and won the inaugural ECU Achievement in International Research and Creative Activity Award (2017).? In 2018, he was elected to the Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) (2018) and won the Lifetime Achievement Research Award from ECU (2019). In 2020, he also won the Cotton Biotechnology Award.
