Plant Spotlight: Mebane, N.C.
NOVO Health Services
Offering a combined service that provides a total and unique opportunity for Sterile and Non-Sterile Linen requirements.
The Mebane plant is located between Greensboro and Durham and has been part of the NOVO Health Services family since 2016. The facility is known for not only healthcare linen management but medical device sterilization.?
Due to its location in addition to its depot in Maryland, the Mebane plant provides sterile and non-sterile surgical linen as well as sterile Instruments to many local hospitals and offsite surgery centers throughout North Carolina, Virgina, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. While the facility was 30,000 square feet when it was built in 1992, it later doubled in size, and now sterilizes more than 1.5 million surgical packs each year.?
When asked what he thinks the plant's biggest success has been, Cy Gropper, vice president of operations, believes like NOVO's other plants, it is the facility's emergency preparedness that offers the reliability that NOVO's clients depend on. "During COVID when the supply chain was affected, we were able to still serve our healthcare clients so they could continue to operate on their patients," he said. "We also were instrumental in providing PPE and isolation gowns to major hospitals in the area."
The Mebane plant offers gowns made from highly technical materials that protect both the medical staff and patients in surgery and it uses a highly complex wash formula to ensure all products are clean and ready for sterilization. Once they are processed in the plant, they move to the facility's sterilizing station where all pieces are sterilized and packaged for delivery. "Our products meet all the recommended Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards for surgical protection and sterilization, and we offer three levels of protection for all types of surgeries and procedures," Gropper noted. "We are proud that our facility is a state-of-the-art instrument processing department that provides a solution to support surgery centers throughout the region."

Gropper credits the service and production employees with making the Mebane plant so successful, as well as many team members' long tenure and their commitment to providing high-quality products to the facility's hospital clients so they can better serve their patients. "I would also like to recognize our sales and service team," he noted. "Rupal Desai has been with us for the past 5 years and is truly the face of our organization in Mebane to our customers. She has not only served them well with outstanding service, but also has been a big part of the growth within the facility.
"Additionally, Abby Martin, who runs our service team and has been with us for the past 4 years, has really made a difference when it comes to meeting our commitments to our customers as it relates to deliveries. She is supported by Whitney Narine who is out in the field every day, providing the high level of service that our clients expect from NOVO," he added.
Each year, the Mebane plant partners with the Red Cross and local fire department to help train staff members in fire and safety protocols. In addition to its focus on teamwork and safety, the Mebane facility prides itself on more than 30 years of service to the healthcare industry and its priority of sustainability, including adopting a reclaim process that reduces wastewater in the community. As noted in a recent article by Eric Vozzola BSChE, Michael Overcash PhD, Evan Griffing PhD in the AORN Journal (The Official Voice of Perioperative Nursing), "...selection of reusable gowns rather than disposable gowns reduced natural resource energy consumption (64%), greenhouse gas emissions (66%), blue water consumption (83%), and solid waste generation (84%)."?
