Plant The Seeds Now For The Consulting Business You Want Next Quarter

We would all like a crystal ball right now but while it can feel that the world is out of control, there are still plenty of things you can be doing to bring stability to your consulting business.

If you haven’t already, you need to make building relationships part of your daily activities. Check in with people. This isn’t about asking for work but finding out how they are. Pick up the phone and check in with key contacts.

If you have a simple way you can help them, maybe an article or resource they would benefit from, send it to them with a personal note.

Reach out to people and form new relationships. That might sound scary but it’s not about being salesy or sending out cold pitches. You just need to be a human being and speak to people. Have a virtual coffee with associates or collaboration partners and ask them how you can help.

If you can provide valuable insight and information that your audience need, write blog posts and articles on social media.

Now is not the time to hide away. Get brave, show up as a leader and show your people you can help them find the way through this.

No-one has all the answers, but you can still signpost the best way forward. People who need to hear from you may be listening, maybe even more intently than they would do normally.

All these activities will enable you to plant seeds now for the business you want next quarter.

Do you understand your lead generation and sales process? What does it take to turn a cold lead into a sale? How long does it take?

Don’t let a scarcity mindset set the course for your consulting business at the moment. It will have disastrous consequences.

You need to be able to approach the future with confidence and be comfortable with keeping your aims high.

Go high ticket. I know it doesn’t feel comfortable to do this. You might be thinking: “How can I ask for more of their budget at a time like this?” But there are many, many reasons why this is exactly the right tack at the moment.

Your clients may well need more support than normal. As we all now know, pandemics are traumatic. Your clients have never needed your support more than they do now.

Start to think about what this might look like. Instead of an online training day, could you offer one to one coaching or mentoring to senior management or C suite? Instead of a simple framework, can you offer support with implementation?

Make sure you are focusing on companies which are able to invest with you. As I said in my previous article, you need to 'follow the money'.

Go deeper with your existing clients and audience. Sow the seeds now so that you are able to create more revenue from fewer sales, making your business better able to navigate uncertain times at the same time as helping your clients to do this too.

I love the "you can still the sign post" comment. I just watched a video about how Starbucks wants to be everybody's "3rd stop", 1st stop home, 2nd stop work, 3rd stop Starbucks.
