Plant-Based Food Alternatives Becoming More Mainstream

More global consumers will adopt diets based around the avoidance and moderation of meat in the next 12 months, according to research from?FMCG Gurus. When consumers were asked why they do not eat meat on a regular basis, 80% stated that it was because of environmental concerns, while 74% of consumers said that they associated eating less meat with being healthier, FMCG Gurus’ data showed. Although the motivation for moderating meat intake differs across various consumer groups, the research shows that the main reasons relate to?health?and?sustainability?concerns.
Diageo, the world's largest spirits maker, beat?first-half sales forecasts?as it raised prices and more people drank premium?spirits. The London-based company, which makes Tanqueray?gin, Captain Morgan's rum and Ketel One?vodka, said organic net sales rose 9.4% in the six months to December 31, beating analyst forecasts for a 7.9% rise. The growth reflected organic volume growth of 1.8%, indicting 7.6 percentage points of higher price growth. Organic operating profit grew 10%.
Danish Crown, one of the largest meat-processing companies in Europe, has announced that it plans to reduce its production capacity in Germany. Danish Crown?noted?that the reduction is due to the declining numbers of animals being slaughtered, as well as decreasing?pork?consumption in the country. Furthermore, the company has claimed that since Germany was hit by?African swine fever?in the early autumn of 2020, the production of pigs has dropped.
Aldi Süd?has?announced?that it has reached the milestone of 2,000 stores in?Germany, with the landmark store opening in Hamminkeln-Mehrhoog on January 26. “Opening the 2000th Aldi Süd branch is something special for us," commented Jan Riemann, director real estate at Aldi Süd. "For more than 100 years we have been making sustainable shopping affordable for everyone in our Aldi Süd branches, and are continuously improving accessibility for our customers."
The?food?industry in?Germany?saw sales volumes decline for the second year in a row in 2022, due to unprecedented?inflation?in production costs,?according?to the Federation of German Food and Drink Industries (BVE). Food sales for the year declined by 1.8%, with sales abroad – typically a growth engine – falling by 5.5%. Food prices increased by more than 45%, while the energy commodities index hit record highs in 2022 – up by 158%, year on year.
Public demand for sustainable practices from businesses and corporations has really ramped up in the past few years. In particular, both the grocery retail and consumer goods industries have been under increased scrutiny because of the sheer volume of plastic and packaging that they produce on a daily basis.
