Plant-based Cooking in Schools: everything you need to know

The world of plant-based cooking can seem a little daunting at first if you're new to it. For school caterers, navigating nutritional guidelines, costs, quantities, and new recipes can seem like a mammoth task when you're not familiar with plant-based foods. But it doesn't have to be - many schools have successfully created healthy, climate-friendly menus full of easy-to-make plant-powered meals, and you can too!

In 2018, we launched our School Plates programme to provide caterers with the tools, training and knowledge they need to provide high-quality menus fuelled by plants. Through training workshops, menu consultancy and recipe development, we've created a free support programme to help schools slash food emissions while serving delicious dishes that children love. We're delighted to report that we're working with over 6,500 schools across the UK through School Plates, and together, we've turned nearly 15 million meals meat-free!

So how can you get involved? What steps do you need to take to make plant-based cooking as simple as possible? And how do you ensure you get children on board with new dishes?

Workshops

We highly recommend that you come along to one of our Plant-based Cooking In Schools online workshops. These sessions are aimed specifically at caterers, or anyone else who is interested, from individual schools. They are held monthly via zoom, and are free to attend.

In each workshop, we demonstrate how to prepare simple, inexpensive, nutritionally-balanced and - most importantly - tasty, plant-based meals that children love. Our recipes are taste-tested by kids and developed specifically to meet national school food guidelines. That means you don't have to worry about where to get enough plant protein, iron or omega-3 in your dishes - we've taken care of that for you. Our recipes also include emissions breakdowns so you can see just how carbon-friendly they are. On average, our dishes produce less than a third of the CO2 emissions of meat-based school dinners.

We also discuss the nutritional and climate benefits of plant-based school food at the beginning of each session. Not everyone is aware of the benefits of plant-based eating, so we want to make sure you've got the facts and figures at hand to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of our food choices.
