Planning your recruitment process around restrictions - Coronavirus (COVID-19)

With numbers of the UK population testing positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) rising daily. It is hugely important to us all to reduce the economic impact of the outbreak as much as we can and for as long as possible.

Whilst most businesses plan to continue operations to usual standards, the protection of your existing workforce is (as it should be) the highest priority. The current situation is changing daily. It could mean the postponing or cancellation of face-to-face meetings or imposing restrictions to site access. This could have an adverse effect on your recruitment process and in turn potentially lead to losing out on strong candidates who are maybe further on in processes elsewhere.

The good news however is that with an increased number of companies offering flexible working patterns, home working and the rise in the use of technology over the years a lot of businesses are in great shape to cope. Here are some tips to keep your recruitment process moving over the next few weeks:

  • Identify how you can adapt your current process and introduce new technologies if required.
  • Prepare for changes to workflow planning, advertising jobs now with closing dates and diarise time to review CV's and shortlists.
  • Think about using video interview and let candidates complete this as a first stage interview.
  • Provide flexibility: Video interviews can be completed by candidates from home in their own time and accessed by hiring managers to view using various forms of technology including tablets and mobile phones.
  • Use your recruitment partners resource; ask them to conduct advanced interview techniques on your behalf such as matched competency or skills-based interviews, utilise online assessment tools. Remember advice is free!
  • Have a back up plan for sickness, identify a staff member who could conduct the interview on your behalf if required.
  • If you have reduced site access, investigate outsourced providers of office space and hotel meeting room facilities to conduct the important final interview face-to-face.
