Planning Success
Peak Architects are delighted that after 2 years of detailed consultation with Historic England, the Peak District Planning and Conservation teams we have now received full planning and listed building for the conversion of the Spital Building, a Grade 2 listed Mill Building located on the edge of the village of Castleton in the White Peak of Derbyshire in the Peak District National Park. The conversion provides a modern detached 5 bedroom house which includes a separate guest suite and two bedrooms which sit within a contemporary free standing glass structure.
The buildings currently consist of a cluster of buildings comprising of a single storey L-shaped Shippam buildings together with the Mill Building, which is a derelict and roofless structure. This cluster creates a natural U-shaped courtyard looking south towards the Village of Castleton and Peveril Castle. This enclosure is further defined by a dry stone wall along the southern edge of the square, within which is a gated access to the adjacent paddock to the South.
Careful consideration was given to the ruin of the Mill building and imparticular its stabilisation as it was in danger of imminent collapse. The proposal includes a lightweight 2 storey pod along the northern end of the building which is integrated into a free standing stabilising frame which sits within the walls of the existing structure. The frame is supported on a piled structure designed to accommodate any below ground archaeology.
