When planning for a photography session, preparation is key to making the most of your time and capturing standout images. Here's a simple guide to planning a street photography outing, using a few essential tools to elevate your workflow.
1. Start with Google Maps
Before you head out, use Google Maps to scout potential locations. Zoom in on different streets and landmarks in the area you want to explore. This gives you a sense of the layout and where interesting scenes might unfold—think busy intersections, local markets, or unique architecture. You can also use Street View to virtually walk through the area, spotting hidden gems and narrowing down your focus. Having a mental map of your locations saves time and energy, so you can dive right into shooting.
2. Plan for Light with Photographer’s Ephemeris
Lighting can make or break your street photos. To plan your outing around the best natural light, use the Photographer's Ephemeris app. This tool allows you to see how the light will fall on your chosen locations at sunrise, sunset, and even golden hour. It’s especially helpful for understanding shadows and light direction in urban environments, so you can anticipate the most dramatic moments.

3. Seek Inspiration on Pinterest
For a creative boost, check out Pinterest before your shoot. Search for street photography styles or themes, like reflections, silhouettes, or urban portraits. Create a mood board to collect ideas and find inspiration from other photographers. This practice can spark new ideas or help you refine the narrative you want to tell with your photos.
By incorporating these tools into your planning process, you’ll not only save time but also set yourself up for a successful shoot that produces high-quality, marketable images. Happy shooting!
