Planning My Group Home Business for the New Year: My Checklist for Success

Planning My Group Home Business for the New Year: My Checklist for Success

If you know me, you know planning is practically my love language. Each year, as December comes around, I dive into my year-end checklist to reflect on what went well, what I’d like to improve, and how I can keep things running smoothly in my group home business. This list has become a bit of a ritual for me, and I love sharing it with fellow group home operators who are also looking to streamline their businesses for the new year. Let’s go over this checklist together, so you can set your own business up for success!

Reflect on the Past Year

Before diving into new goals, it’s so important to look back. I start by asking myself some key questions:

- Did I achieve the goals I set at the beginning of last year?

- Where did I succeed, even if it wasn’t on the original list?

- What went wrong, and why? These insights can help me pivot or avoid similar pitfalls in the future.

And don’t forget to celebrate your wins! Running a group home business can be challenging, so take a moment to appreciate how far you've come.

?Set Goals for Each Key Area of the Business

Once I’ve reflected, it’s time to create my plan for the new year. I break it down into these areas to keep things organized:

?- Finance: Set revenue goals, explore new revenue streams, and consider any strategic moves like hiring more staff or launching a new service.

- Marketing: Identify any new ways to reach potential residents or partners and set a plan for content or social media.

- Operations: Review the systems that keep things running smoothly. Can anything be automated or outsourced?

- Information/Technology: Evaluate software or tools to see if updates or changes are needed to stay efficient.

- Research & Development: Look into potential partnerships with other professionals or ways to expand services.

Evaluate Your Vendors & Supplies

A quick review of vendors and supplies can help ensure you’re getting the best service and pricing. Ask yourself:

- Are my current vendors charging reasonable rates?

- Are they flexible with my business’s needs?

Sometimes, trying a new vendor or supplier can even give you leverage with existing ones!

Assess Equipment, Supplies, and Furniture

Is the furniture holding up? Do the supplies meet your quality standards? Making these checks now can help you plan ahead for any replacements or upgrades.

Plan for Staffing & Marketing Adjustments

Take a look at your staffing and marketing efforts, and think about what could help you stand out against competitors. Could a few strategic hires help your business grow? Are your current marketing efforts bringing in the right audience?

Financial Planning & Budgeting

A quick review of your financial reports (like the profit & loss statement and cash flow) will give you a snapshot of where the business stands. After that, I recommend:

- Creating a budget for the year.

- Gathering tax documents, like receipts and bank statements.

- Marking quarterly estimated tax dates and any annual filing due dates on your calendar.

Planning On-Site Visits and Personal Time

Finally, I map out my on-site visits for the year. Depending on my schedule, I’ll visit my group homes every other month or quarterly. I also believe in planning downtime. Every two months, I plan a long weekend trip, and I schedule a date with my husband every two weeks—because balance is key!

Conclusion

Setting up your group home business for the new year doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With this checklist, you’ll be able to tackle it step-by-step, keeping things organized and in control.
