Planning for Horse Stalls in Your Barn

Are you planning on constructing a barn or renovating an existing structure? You should know RAMM Horse Fencing & Stalls has been offering high-quality horse stall systems for over 30 years. As with every product we sell, our stall systems offer a comprehensive choice, quality craftsmanship, durability, and affordability. Of course, safety is always our number one priority at RAMM, so all the horse stall systems are built with the most accident-prone horse in mind. Before you begin your research, you’ll want to know the important verbiage used with purchasing horse stalls. Below, is a list of the most common few.

Common Horse Stall Terminology

Gauge – refers to the thickness of the steel used in construction. The lower the gauge number, the stronger the steel. RAMM uses 14-gauge steel on the body of horse stalls and 16-gauge steel on all the grillwork sections, which is superior in strength over most stall systems on the market. Although aluminum is sometimes used as a material for horse stalls, it does not have the strength of steel. Aluminum manufactured stalls will bend or even worse, crack under pressure from a horse.

Galvanization – is the process used to coat the steel in zinc. Both of RAMM's kit stalls (Essex & Derby) have a galvanized finish from a process known as electro-galvanization. During this process, the steel is coated with a layer of zinc, helping ward off any oxidation, which leads to rust. All of our other horse stall series (Cambridge, Oxford, Dublin, Tuscany, & Nobleman) have the option to be hot-dip galvanized. Hot-dip galvanization is a process that ensures even longer rust protection.

Powder-Coating – offers our customers a beautiful finish. At Ramm, we believe in quality. We highly recommend our superior powder-coated finish over most of our competitors. After our stalls are hot-dipped and allowed to dry, we spray each piece with a powder-coating primer, allow it to bake halfway, and then finish with a specially blended grade of paint. Our curing process provides the most durable finish for your stall and is three times longer than most standard powder-coatings used on the market today!

Welding – the process of joining two pieces of metal together. It’s usually accomplished by hot-melting both adjoining pieces and adding a filler to ensure a strong joint. At RAMM, once horse stalls are assembled, we blast/sand the joints and stall itself to eliminate all impurities before painting. No matter where you’re buying your stalls from, be sure they are burr and bump-free; impurities can snag a horse’s lip or sensitive nose and cause injury!

Now that we’re familiar with some of the terminology, let’s look at a few different horse stall product options offered at RAMM:

  • Nobleman horse stalls are beautiful, functional, and easily customizable as well. This system comes has every bell and whistle, with kits including the newly innovated Premium track sliding stall door system, a one-piece welded stall front frame, your door and/or arch of choice, posts, and all the hardware needed to install it! Many like the v-door option to allow for socialization among the horses. Choose a finish of either a hot-dip galvanized [metallic look] or powder-coated paint [choose the color of your choice!] over steel. Typical front lengths are either 12' or 10', but custom lengths are available.
  • Tuscany horse stalls are the most elegant RAMM horse stalls. If the Tuscany stall series was an actress, it would be Sophia Loren; curvy, flirtatious, and fun! With all those curves, in all the right places, horses have the opportunity to socialize with neighbors without having nose-to-nose contact. Close-set bars and hidden welds make this one of the safest horse stall systems on the market. Other features include elegant finials and feed openings to make caring for your horse a pleasure. As we say here at RAMM, the only safer place than a Tuscany Stall is a bomb shelter. Available in either 12' or 10' fronts.
  • Cambridge horse stalls are the most economical welded horse stall series at RAMM. The ease of installation is rapidly making this horse stall system a favorite of DIYers and builders/contractors alike! They feature closer bar spacing, fully welded doors & grillwork, and many more customization options. You have the option of either a powder-coat black or hot-dip galvanized finish as either a 12' or 10' front.
  • Derby horse stall kits offer an attractive and economical, yet durable and safe choice for the budget-conscious. These stall kits are made of non-corrosive galvanized steel so you don’t have to worry about your stalls rusting over the years. They’re customizable as well; adding a feed opening kit makes feeding easier. Pick from a 12' or 10' kit, maybe add a partition in between and you will have your stalls up in no time!

Horse stalls represent a significant investment for most farm owners, no matter what the use. Be sure to choose wisely when it comes to safety, durability, and your pocketbook! We at RAMM Horse Fencing & Stalls are here for you when you’re ready to make that investment.
