Planning for the < 1%

I've always had a desire to have more than one USB port on my computer. That's why my favorite portable Surface device is the Surface Book (it has more than 2 USB ports). But what I finally realized is I can count on one hand the amount of times with a portable device that I personally had more than one thing plugged in at a time. This "requirement" or desire is not based in how I actually use my devices, but the once of twice that I am travelling and might have one of my older mice (that uses a USB dongle to pair with my computer) and then want to transfer a file to/from the device with a USB stick - there you have it! I NEED more than 1 USB port! See - this proves it!

Now if looking back at the times when I needed a wired network connection + a wired or dongled mouse + a USB drive and any other accessory were often enough, maybe that would make my requirement more valid than just a nice to have. The Surface dock uses the Surface Connect Port so the USB is still available and a lot more USB ports are on the dock. How many times do we plan for something that happens, but doesn't happen frequently enough for it to be a requirement. I will still PREFER to have more than one USB port (and the Surface Book 15" will still be my favorite portable two in one device), but as I type this on my Surface Pro 6 (which is thinner and lighter to carry for an entire week of travel). I have to rethink this and decide is the extra weight while travelling really worth it or not.

Some Sunday thoughts as I got to thinking about disconnecting my "old school" mouse today to transfer some videos and free up some additional space on my phone's microSD card.
