Planetary Boundary Cities: What is it?
What is a planetary boundary city? you ask.
It is an environment where cities help positively contribute to environmental regeneration. A place that produces more energy than it consumes. A place that is net positive on all aspects. A place where people and planet live in harmony. It is a place that might not yet exist, but inspires us to believe in the possible; inspires us to do better, to build better, to be better. It is a place that reminds us that there is a better way.
The planetary boundaries are nine Earth system processes each with a science based target (well almost all) which we must remain within if we are to continue habitable life on earth. A planetary boundary city takes this scientific framework and re-purposes it in the design and build of our urban habitats.
In the coming days, weeks, months you'll be seeing more from me on the topic of planetary boundaries, sustainable development, regenerative design, restorative systems, and all the spaces in between. This is a topic I care passionately about, and I strive to figure out how we can better utilize, mold, and shape the built environment to achieve positive planetary conditions.
I look forward to shaping, sharing and speaking with you all in the future.
Watch out for the term: PBC and or PB Cities (as shorthand)

4 年Steffen et al. (2011) wrote a piece about planetary boundaries: https://www.thesolutionsjournal.com/article/how-defining-planetary-boundaries-can-transform-our-approach-to-growth/ Also, Herbert Girardet (2015) published a book, Creating Regenerative Cities. Your article fits nicely with all of this and takes it a step further!

4 年Great short read- are 'planetary citizens' and 'planetary governance' needed to deliver this in our cities?
