It is said that good governance begins with an entity's Board of Directors but a dysfunctional Boardroom can create a multitude of governance related risks. So what about an entity that does not have a conventional Board of Directors?

It is no exaggeration to state that this planet of ours is currently facing existential governance challenges, but how would one go about addressing the herculean task of assessing the governance activities of Planet Earth as an entity? How would one consider providing a sound governance opinion on the current state of Planet Earth as a global multinational conglomerate?

A new working paper entitled Planet Governance: Why Good Governance is Critical for Planet Preservation attempts to address this very issue as it adopts a truly holistic approach to planet governance by applying traditional corporate governance principles and expectations to Planet Earth as a single geo-political economic entity.

The paper specifically addresses the following governance criteria in the context of the governance challenges facing Planet Earth:

• Issues: Power and Authority, Board of Directors, Board Committees and Sub-Committees, Remuneration, Stakeholder Relations
• Due Diligence: Governance Risk, Governance Compliance, Governance Intelligence, Governance Security, Governance Resilience, Governance Controls, and Governance Assurance

Planet Governance - Opinion

This paper is intended to be thought provoking. It requires the reader to be willing to stretch outside of their comfort zone and to start to think outside the box in terms of the governance challenges facing Planet Earth. It certainly raises a number of difficult and uncomfortable questions which need to be both considered and addressed. In the process it also raises a number of serious concerns about the current approach to the governance of our planet.

This project includes examining the eight critical planet defense components, namely Planet Governance, Planet Risk, Planet Compliance, Planet Intelligence, Planet Security, Planet Resilience, Planet Controls, and Planet Assurance both individually and collectively. These eight critical components are considered to be interconnected, interlinked, and interdependent as each impacts on and is impacted by each of the other components.
