No Plan = No Paddle (SOSTAC Planning)

Last week I was chatting with a former attendee of our SOSTAC Digital Masterclass about the importance of “Situation” which is the first of the Six Fundamental Facets of Marketing. Prior to the class, like many marketers before him, he had a stronger appreciation of where he wanted the company to be in the future than than exactly where they were at the time.

I have to admire his honesty when he admitted that he learned a great deal on the day, especially considering he really thought that "Situation" would be the bit he had covered.

Before you jump in and say that any good marketer should know where they are, consider the facts. When was the last time you reviewed market trends? How about competitor strategy and intelligence? In terms of internal capabilities and resources, is there anything that you need to achieve your goals?

Trying to move forward without “Situation” is a bit like trying to use Google Maps as a Sat Nav without internet - if you don’t get the information you need before you set off, you’ll be staring at a blank map and a blue dot that isn't going to help you get where you're going.
