Plan now so you can enjoy summer

It’s graduation season. My social media feed is filled with beautiful pictures of friends and relatives showcasing the achievements of their children as they cross the stage, throw their hats in the air and show off their newly minted degrees and diplomas. It’s an exciting time. One filled with pride, excitement, and sometimes fear… what’s next?

This takes me back to one of my own graduations - with gown on and newly minted degree in hand, I was tearful – fearful even. What next? I’ve got this degree but I had no idea what I was going to do with it or what my next steps were going to be. (I wasn’t as planful as I am now, so all those dots hadn’t been connected yet.)

Have you ever had a moment like that? Where you had accomplished one thing and thoughts immediately went to “what’s next?” - even skipping over the moment of accomplishment? Not relishing all that you deserve to celebrate right now?

Well, instead of preaching “live in the moment” (a mindful goal I try to live everyday) I'd like to invite you now to “live in the future” for a day. June is a great time to step back and do a mid-year review of what has gone well so far, and to consider how you want the next half of the year to go. With our preciously short Canadian summers, I like to maximize my time off, so I kick into planning mode to get more tasks off my plate now – in June - so I can enjoy more backyard bbqs and days at the lake in July and August.

When you work for yourself, it can be difficult to truly unplug. I get that. So let’s make some plans and get tasks ticked off the list now - so you can enjoy the summer that is to come. You business owners and not-for-profit executives may like to pop into my next CEO Day - Align Your Planning. All the info is below - it will help you get your head around the future, so you can enjoy more of the present.

Hope to see you there - on June 14 – when we’ll plan for the future so you can live in the moment during the summer.

Get Planning Now So You Can Enjoy Your Summer!

Let’s revisit the plans you made at the beginning of the year – and if you didn’t make any, there’s no time like the present! Let’s get into action with a few of your favourite business bestie’s and join me for my next CEO Day.

Let’s make our plans together, and then go after them!!!

It’s a day to step away from the busyness of working IN your business to work ON your business for one focused day so you can:

  • Take a step back and review your business progress to date
  • Tackle your 2024 Business Goals and see if they need adjusting
  • Design the second half of the year for success
  • Land on the key thing you need to put in place now, to reap the benefits later
  • Identify what you NEED to do over the summer to ensure you don’t lose momentum
  • Make some smart business decisions to move your business forward
  • Make sure you’re re-inspired to work hard on the right things.

See you there – and don’t forget to bring along one of your business besties. Planning is so much more fun with a friend.

FROM MY READING NOOK

The E-Myth Revisited, by Michael Gerber is a sweet little book about business that packs a punch. I read it years ago, probably 5 years or so after launching my first business. It opened my eyes to a fatal assumption that many new business owners make – that “if you understand the technical work of a business, you understand a business that does that technical work.” Not so, as you’ll soon find out.? Gerber also talks about making time to work “on” your business, not just “in” it. Which is why I designed our quarterly CEO Days to do just that. If you think like a business owner and not just a technician, your business is more likely to thrive. Take a read and let me know what you think!

Here in Calgary, I have been attending high school and junior high band concerts and awards ceremonies all week! As in your article, I've seen the bright shining, hopeful and proud faces of so many families. These young adults have been working hard, building their futures. Some have big plans, others feeling nervous about what direction to choose. It reminded me of what matters in our work - our connection to ourselves, fulfilling our joy and living on purpose, sharing our knowledge and learning from others. As you've said Susan, planning as a business owner is critical to ensure we can create the time and space for ourselves to just be and check in with where we intentionally want to go in our businesses. Plus have a whole lot of fun too. The idea of June being a catch up and prep month is great! I am going to try that, rather than seeing summer as an extension of the rest of the year, with a bit of time off. I really enjoy reading your blogs and posts - keep them coming! Lisa
