NO PLAN CAN BE A PLAN
Where do u see yourself in the next 5 years??What’s your 5-year plan?
Questions I was asked at multiple stages of my life - School, College, Internship & job interviews. In all honesty, all I did to answer them was tell a lie. I was just surrounded by people who had all their life figured out - What subject they will take in 10th, which language they will learn, what college they will go to, what career they want to pursue - everything was sorted. And there I was with no plans. So, I lied. I asked my friends what they were planning & I just copy-pasted the answer.
My Mother/ Scholl teachers - What do u want to become.
Me - Journalist (Lie - My friends wanted to become one)
I don’t know if any one of you out there relates to this topic (If you can please do leave a comment - Tell me I was and I am not alone).
Today I am sharing this because now I feel it is fine if you are like me & you are not able to find your path. Don’t feel alone like I did that time. Having no pans does not make us less smart or a failure. It’s just that we are more curious people, we want to see more to select the right path for us. Trust me you will know when it’s the right one – like I found mine with the music industry.
I worked as a tutor, in a call center, an event company as an MC, organized events, did wildlife documentaries, tried video editing, became a voice-overs artist, wrote ad films, became a serious journalist by coving Delhi bomb blast, covered entertainment beat, became an anchor, did SEO for websites & countless other things. All above, helped me land in the ‘Music Industry’ - my passion. I am writing today to share the beauty aspect of my NO PLAN life.
No Plan – No Expectation – No Pressure – Only learning. ?
I did so many jobs, tried so many things, every small job was a new opportunity for me. I did every work to the best of my ability and came out with new learnings. I don’t think any college or any education institute would have given me such diverse education. Every small job I did that time helped me in my current role. E.g. – being an anchor helped me become a good speaker & I don’t have camera fear. SEO job helped me understand how online search works & how I can use it for my artist music releases. My call center job gave me the confidence to speak in English & the list goes on and on.

I did what I did with my whole heart, even if didn’t work out It's was fine. I was just searching for what I love & it took time. This princess has to kiss a lot of frogs to find her prince charming.
Versatile Professional Network
Doing so many different jobs, gave me a beautiful opportunity to meet different people from different fields. I know how the hotel industry works, How events can be organized, How the mortgage system works. I know people hotel industry, New papers, New channels, TV channels, Radio stations & so on.
I would have never made this versatile network if I would have a plan & was doing one job in the same field.
No Fear of Change
With so many experiments, I am not scared of change. If I want, I can shift gears anytime and try any new field. New work, new role excites me. I am not scared of change as my mind works differently now - the first thought in my mind with a challenge is– I will learn something new. ?
In the end my friend, If you are worried you are not able to hold a job for long. It's ok! Just keep going & take one step at a time. You will find your passion. If your sons/daughters are not sure what they will do in the future. It's ok! Give them time. They will find it. Every individual is different so stop judging everyone from the same scale.
Just FYI, I still don’t have a plan. Unlike my old self, today I can proudly say, I have no plans. I don’t know where I will be in the next 5 years & what I will be doing in the next 5 years. I am taking life one step at a time.

3 年Congratulations Shilpa, your story is definitely an inspiration for me. At stages of life, it is tough to figure out about what has to be done but the moment you start liking something, things will fall into place. Thank you for the article.

3 年Congratulations Shilpa! Sometimes the best of plans lead you nowhere! As someone who wanted to study ARTS & pursue Journalism since the age of 12, I ended up studying Science with a majors degree in Botany - only to do an MBA in Marketing. On the face of it, none of these things make sense to my current job; but to me personally - in many ways, they do! Our experiences shape us into who we are! So kudos to that attitude!
