Plain-language family law videos
John-Paul Boyd KC
Accredited family law mediator, arbitrator and parenting coordinator
Looking for family law resources in video format? I've now got 26 plain-language public legal education and information videos up on my YouTube channel, Five Minute Family Law. The videos are intended to supplement Courthouse Libraries BC's print and internet publication JP Boyd on Family Law and are, at present, geared toward family law in British Columbia. The information provided on federal legislation is relevant, of course, to everyone.
Here's the list of videos, excluding those addressing COVID-19 and family law, as of today:
The Basics
- Federal and provincial laws (an explainer on the legislation on family law issues)
- Trial courts and dispute resolution (a discussion of mediation, collaborative negotiation, arbitration and litigation)
- Divorce
- Parenting after separation
- Child support
- Spousal support
- Property and Debt
Starting Relationships
- Living together
- Getting married
- Becoming a parent (a discussion of parentage, including for children conceived by assisted reproduction)
Ending Relationships
- Separation and the law
- Separation and property rights
- Separation, you and your ex (this is about good behaviour and good boundaries after separation)
- Breaking off engagements
- Getting divorced
- Getting a marriage annulled
The next series of videos will talk about parenting after separation, including guardianship, parental responsibilities, parenting time and contract under British Columbia's Family Law Act, and decision-making responsibility, parenting time and contract under the amended Divorce Act. After that, I intend to cover child support and spousal support before getting into family violence and the division of property and debt.
I've also published a grab bag of narrated PowerPoint presentations on subjects that need charts, animations and other graphics, such as examples of completed court forms, to cover adequately:
- The courts of British Columbia explained
- Family law legislation explained (this one is fun)
- Finding and understanding legislation and case law
- What's new in the new Divorce Act
- How to fill out affidavits of service (this is intended for lawyers and notaries public outside of British Columbia asked to notarize affidavits of service for people starting divorce claims inside British Columbia)
- The do-it-yourself divorce process in British Columbia (this one is fun too)
The channel also includes a collection of as many not-for-profit Canadian public legal education and information YouTube channels. If you know of any PLEI channels that I'm missing, please let me know and I'll add them.
Please subscribe to my YouTube channel. Once I hit the 100 subscriber mark, YouTube will give me my own URL... which would be great, because "UCzCWEyKKny_W3qDfyrSM-6Q" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.
