Places that make us better

In the past twelve months, I have, in one way or another, spent time in various universities. This experience has helped me realize the global significance of these institutions.

Universities are places where innovation thrives and where we can transform our perspectives on the world—physically, socially, politically, and more.

The moment you step onto a university campus, you can feel the energy. You know that something within you will change as you immerse yourself in this environment. You’ll be challenged, and the outcome will be an evolution of yourself.

Why you get these changes?

Irrespective of your field of study or whether you attain a degree, the primary impact comes from the people around you. The individuals you encounter at universities are seeking change, personal growth, and challenges. In the process, they will inevitably challenge you as well.

When you surround yourself with such people, growth becomes the only outcome. Competitiveness nurtures personal development, and in a competitive environment, you have no choice but to find ways to excel and improve.

Recently, I visited Stanford University to discuss Artificial Intelligence and its responsible development. Early on, I found myself outside of my comfort zone as the professor began explaining their vision of Responsible AI in the near term, using various mathematical formulas to address complex problems. Instead of becoming frustrated, I found it fascinating. I knew this experience would contribute to my personal growth, as I was being challenged to conduct further research. My curiosity was ignited, and this had already initiated changes within me.

The power of diversity

One of the most enriching learning experiences I’ve had was during the Global Executive Academy at MIT last summer. I was fortunate to be part of a highly diverse group, encompassing various backgrounds, approaches, styles, and industries.

It was incredible to gain insights from these diverse perspectives. I immediately recognized how this diversity would propel me forward, breaking down preconceptions and boundaries to make space for new, improved, and unique ways of thinking.

Places like these, where you encounter high levels of diversity, are immensely valuable. Avoiding your comfort zone is crucial.

It is not limited

Universities serve as just one example of such places. This concept isn’t confined to academia; it can be applied in your own organization, a club, a group of friends, or even a coffee shop.

Take the initiative to engage in discussions on subjects in which you aren’t an expert—subjects that require research. Begin fostering this environment within your organization or community.

What matters most is coming together with people who challenge you, urging you to seek solutions in unconventional ways. The outcome will be personal growth.

So, venture out and seek the amazing individuals who will help you become better!

P.S.: I recently left my son at the University of Glasgow. I am genuinely excited to see him thrive in this new environment, surrounded by remarkable people who will undoubtedly challenge him and foster his growth. ??
