PlacemakingX: One Hat One Hand's Adventure in Crafting Creative Places: 6 Requirements for Success

One Hat One Hand recently had the privilege of attending the inaugural PlacemakingX Global summit in the vibrant CDMX. The experience was nothing short of inspiring, as we engaged with a dynamic community from around the globe, all dedicated to placemaking. The summit reignited our passion and commitment to creating places that truly resonate with people.

Our journey into placemaking began in 2007 with the construction of the Panhandle Bandshell, a collaborative effort with Rebar and CMG Landscape Architecture. This project laid the foundation for our commitment to placemaking principles. Over the years, we've embarked on various ventures, including the Peralta Junction community market in West Oakland, San Francisco Play Streets, and our latest endeavor, the India Basin tech hub, in collaboration with the SF Parks Alliance.

The PlacemakingX summit was a transformative experience. Engaging with a diverse global community, we delved into discussions on the multifaceted aspects of placemaking. The consensus was clear – weaving together different perspectives is essential to achieving the common goal of creating better places for all. This refreshing conversation fueled our determination to bridge the gap between the traditional concept of placemaking and a more inclusive approach that encompasses private, corporate, educational, and public spaces.

At One Hat One Hand, we firmly believe placemaking extends beyond traditional public spaces. Wherever people experience space, be it in private offices, corporate settings, universities, airports, or hospitality venues, it is crucial to consider their needs, desires, and expectations. Our design philosophy is enhancing people's health, happiness, and overall well-being.

We implement various tactics, including data collection, creative engagements, and community involvement. Successful placemaking involves:

• Community Engagement: Involving users in the planning and design process is paramount. Understanding the needs, preferences, and aspirations of the people who inhabit or work in a space is essential for successful placemaking.

• Accessibility and Connectivity: Spaces should be easily accessible to people of all abilities and connected to their surroundings. This fosters a sense of community and encourages people to utilize and enjoy the space.
• Comfort and Safety: Placemaking involves creating spaces that are comfortable and safe. Factors like seating, lighting, and overall design contribute to people feeling secure and at ease in a public space.
• Aesthetics and Identity: The visual appeal and ability to reflect the identity of the community contribute to a space's success. Thoughtful design, public art, and cultural elements enhance the overall experience.
• Sustainability: Placemaking principles include a focus on sustainability, both environmentally and in terms of long-term viability. Incorporating sustainable practices in design and maintenance contributes to the resilience of public spaces.
