The place of AI in place

I had an interesting 'conversation' with an AI earlier today to explore the evolving landscape of UK high streets.
As many of us are aware, high streets across the country continue to undergoing significant change as they face ongoing challenges such as the increase in void and vacant units and reduced footfall.
To understand this better, I asked an AI to generate images representing the current state of our high streets using an accurate description of todays high streets. The result was a pretty realistic portrayal of grey, quiet streets, with more empty units and fewer people - a scene that resonates with many of us.
But what about the places we aspire to see?
Inspired by conversations with many of you, I then requested the AI to reimagine the high street, infused with life, variety and community spirit. The AI illustrated bustling streets with events offering a reason for higher footfall and creating a sense of community. Its a stark (yet hopeful!) contrast.

These AI-generated images have sparked an intriguing perspective on what our high streets are and what they could become. They're a reminder of the potential that lies in reimagining and revitalising these essential places and spaces.
Some towns and cities are already doing a fantastic job of curating enviable high street places - but how are these events being marketed to the local (and visitor) masses?
This is an issue that affects every single one of us, and every single one of us has a shared power to make positive change.
So, whether you're a place maker, place marketer or in a completely separate industry - please share your thoughts. What's your vision for the future of 'our' high streets?

11 个月This is so interesting and revealing! I do very much agree that high streets should be more about community and getting people together. The ‘experience’ angle needs to be a bigger priority with group events and celebrations. In my local town there’s still lots of artisan markets, mini carnivals and historic celebrations (which are amazing) - it still feels like the retail side is lacking though and there’s a separation between community and retail. I wonder what the solution is so that things are more integrated?
