PixelSense?: Only on Microsoft Surface
The Laptop Company Limited
The preferred hardware and deployment provider for IT fleets across NZ.
With the Microsoft Surface range refreshed, we're looking at the things that make this the device of choice for different teams in business. Like the rest of our vendor stable, the Surface range is an advanced family of laptops and tablets powered by the latest Intel processors, along with new alternatives powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X.
By far the most noticeable differentiator between the Surface range and its competitors is the use of PixelSense touch screens. Unlike other most vendors, this screen option is standard, providing a uniformly high quality of user experience across all Surface users.
Here's what this means:
1. A taller 3:2 screen is standard.
Every Microsoft Surface device has a 3:2 aspect ratio display. This is taller than the standard widescreen featured on most competing devices. A 3:2 aspect ratio allows more vertical content to be displayed without scrolling. This is most appreciable in Microsoft Word, Excel and web browser windows, as well as coding and creative applications.
2. Touch screens are standard.
Every Surface device has an inbuilt touch screen as standard with gesture support. Surface Pen support for drawing, writing and sketching on-screen in Windows is offered by all models excepting the Surface Laptop Go and Surface Laptop Copilot+PC with Snapdragon.
3. sRGB Colour accuracy is standard.
Most business laptops and monitors have 6-bit displays as standard. These can display 260,000 colours natively. To display the millions of colours output by your software, rapid flickering is used to approximate the shades in-between.
Every Surface model features at least an 8-bit display. These can display 16.9 million native colours without flickering or noise patterns (256 x 256 x 256). This capability is typically cost-extra option on comparable business laptops.
The Surface Pro 10, Surface Pro 11th Edition, Surface Laptop Studio and Surface Studio desktop feature an even higher 10-bit display, capable of displaying 1 billion colours natively.
Higher bit depths allow content creators and users to see smooth gradients, accurate colours and eliminate flickering or noise that may be visible on low bit-depth displays. For anyone creating content to be viewed on other devices on the web, print or large format displays, a minimum 8-bit depth is essential. Evidence of the improved colour performance can be noted in blue sky images, where colour banding is eliminated, as well as highlights which remain colourful, and deep colours that retain their intensity instead of appearing grey.
The screens on Surface Pro, Surface Laptop 6 & Surface Laptop Studio are individually colour-calibrated at the factory. All models support the 100% of the industry-standard sRGB colour gamut except for the Surface Laptop Go with 96%.
By comparison, standard displays in most business-class laptops support 45% of the alternative NTSC colour gamut (which equates to around 66% as many colours). 100% sRGB displays are typically upgrade options for these devices.
4. PixelSense resolution.
Devices powered by Intel Core processors:
The Surface Laptop Go (in orange) uses a small 12.4" 1536 x 1024 resolution display. This is the entry-level Surface. All other models feature uniquely high resolutions compared to the Full HD (1920 x 1080) or WUXGA+ (1920 x 1200) resolution screens of most standard business laptops.
The Surface Laptop 13.5 and 15 inch models, and Surface Pro tablets provide sufficiently high resolution to display Full HD content as well as software application toolbars and interfaces without scrolling. This makes each model well suited to software application and web developers, video editors and PowerPoint presentation authors who need to create content at Full HD resolution without scrolling or zooming. This means more accurate output, and greater productivity for both creative and UI teams.
The additional real estate also provides more usable space in Word, Excel, and web applications without blurring caused by zooming.
The Surface Pro tablet in particular provides a particularly high resolution for its 13 inch screen size to ensure pen strokes using the Surface Slim Pen 2 are smooth, natural and accurate at closer viewing distances than typical laptop usage.

Other PixelSense Options
5. Surface Pen - draw, write, annotate & sketch onscreen
The Surface Pro and Surface Go tablets, Surface Laptop 6, Surface Laptop Studio, Surface Studio desktop and Surface Hub all support drawing and writing on-screen using the Surface Pen. The Surface Slim Pen 2 option provides haptic feedback to emulate things including the texture of paper and can be stowed and wirelessly charged on the Surface Pro Keyboard and Surface Laptop Studio.
6. PixelSense Flow 120Hz
The display on the Surface Pro tablets and Surface Laptop Studio switches from 60 to 120Hz high refresh rate when you are scrolling using the touch screen. 120Hz is also activated on the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop Studio when the Pen is in use. This increases responsiveness by eliminating flickering when interacting hands-on with onscreen content.
7. HDR
The display on the Surface Pro tablets, Surface Laptop Studio and Surface Laptop 7th Edition support HDR. All of these and the Surface Laptop 6 support Dolby Vision IQ. These technologies support brighter highlights and deeper shadows for improved colour accuracy, particularly for video content. The screen brightness, colour and contrast also adapt for the lighting conditions in your workplace.
8. OLED
The Surface Pro 10 with Intel Core Ultra and Surface Pro 11th Edition Copilot+PC have the option of an OLED screen. This offers the highest contrast and colour fidelity of all PixelSense displays.
