Be Aware Of The Common Barriers To Entry ??

???? Let me first start off by saying it is not EASY to enter the Human Resources profession without a strategic approach. Some of the hurdles you may encounter include:

  • ?? Competitive job market: HR is a popular field, attracting many candidates from diverse backgrounds. This creates a competitive job market, especially for entry-level positions. Often, companies prioritize those with experience over fresh graduates.
  • ?? Experience requirement: Many HR jobs require years of experience, even for seemingly basic roles. This can be particularly tough for newcomers looking to gain their first foothold.
  • ?? Skill gap: HR roles demand a blend of hard and soft skills. You need strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, alongside knowledge of employment law, compliance, and HR best practices. Lacking certain skills in this mix can hinder your application.
  • ?? Academic vs. practical gap: Some HR programs might not adequately prepare graduates for the realities of the industry. Additionally, practical experience outside of academic settings can be valuable, which entry-level candidates might lack.
  • ?? Company culture and specialization: HR departments vary greatly across companies based on their size, industry, and culture. Understanding the specific needs and dynamics of the target company and showcasing relevant skills to match is crucial.
  • ?? Perception of HR: Traditionally, HR was seen more as an administrative function than a strategic one. While this perception is changing, it can still influence hiring decisions, making it tougher to get recognized for your potential impact.

Differently in the business of paying it forward, as I remember when my HR manager took a chance on me. I left a solid role to pursue a 3 month contract job as a HR manager for the experience. They thought I wasn’t qualified and just needed someone to fill the set until they gotten someone they really wanted. Then the final HR manager came and groomed me into the person I am today. I will never forget that as 3 months turned into 7 years and counting. Now ready to break through the traditional glass into a whole new untraditional era of what HR can look like. You have a great setup here. Keep up the great work ??

I have recruited before, but I just recently broke into HR by what your post touched on: perseverance and resilience. Having my SHRM cert certainly helped in this transition as well as expressing my desire to help impact an organization. I also think it will setup a nice career path for me down the line. I will never forget how difficult it was to break into. One day, if I’m in a position of power to help, I will give someone a chance because I will remember I was once that person who needed a shot.
