A pivotal year for alternative ingredients?
This year’s dramatic El Ni?o-related decrease in anchoveta harvests have done little to help South American fishermen, the millers who require affordable and abundant fishmeal and oil, or the farmers who rely on marine-based oils and amino acids for the health and growth of their fish and shrimp. However, Kevin Fitzsimmons is convinced that there’s a silver lining – in the shape of an increased demand for alternative ingredients and the chance for producers of these alternatives to upscale and become more efficient. While Fitzsimmons’ role, as chair of the F3 Challenge, means his views on marine ingredients need to be taken with a pinch of sea salt, it would certainly be for the long term good of the aquaculture industry’s reputation, and for ocean biodiversity, if he’s correct.
