Pivotal Moment #1
I plan on posting a series of pivotal moments in my life that highlight lessons that are hopefully helpful or at least interesting to the reader:
The single most pivotal moment in my life was the decision to attend Lewis & Clark College. Going to college was in no way my destiny nor was it much of a consideration in my family. From the time I was 15 I worked in a bakery. Starting out as a dishwasher and by the time I graduated High School, a full-on baker. So, it was assumed that would be my career.?
As a result, my education in high school was substandard, at least by college standards. No high-level math and somewhat limited writing skills. My grades were average at best, reflecting a lack of effort more than anything.
At 19, a year out of High School, I fell into my first serious relationship. We moved in together and for a short while it seemed as if I would follow the traditional local path of marriage, kids and a steady job at the bakery. She, however, had other plans and as fast as the relationship evolved it devolved.?

As so it came to pass that I was to drive her to her mother’s house in Portland for a final goodbye. After which I headed home to Seaside in a foul mood about my life and existence. On I-5, a few miles from downtown Portland, I saw a sign that said Lewis & Clark College Next Right. I took the turn.
Four years later I emerged a double major – Economics and Business Administration. Forty years after that I became a Trustee of the College.??I have no idea what possessed me to make that bold leap. Over the years I have made other bold moves, never one afraid of the big pivot. They haven’t always worked out but having a willingness to try something new, to follow a dream, to create a new dream, has been a cornerstone of my life and career.??
Not sure what the next bold move is yet but it will present itself….
