building the worlds largest online technical community at @torc.dev | vp of global community
im sitting writing this newsletter while getting my hair colored in preparation for next weeks travels. its so nice to be at home for a few days but stoked to already get back out on the road (however my whoop is yelling at me to not go back out on the road lol) next week I am headed to all things open in raleigh where I am speaking on exposing the interview process monday at 1130am est (the same talk I did in cincy) and I got asked to be on a panel about the future of development with the news stack publication at 2:45 est! so stoked about that! jason and briana will be joining me for ATO so look for us! then I will fly back for ONE day to Nashville, regroup, and then head to my first international speaking gig in mexico speaking at jsconf mexico! i will be speaking on the power of community and content on your career.
okay enough about me and my happenings. wanted to give you an overview on whats going on at torc without boring you too much. like I said last week our two main goals were to improve numbers in LATAM and make people feel at home within our community.
lets focus on numbers for LATAM today. this job is a delicate balance of recruiting, community building, and content creation and I have to know which levers to pull when, and right now we gotta CRANK the lever of recruiting. one of the ways we, at torc, separate ourselves, is the large community we have in LATAM on our platform. however, the last few weeks with my transition coming on we slipped so i need to fix it asap. i spent 11 years as a traditional recruiter and 5 of those were in leadership so I pulled from my background and did a crash course on messaging/linkedin with my team (none of them have been recruiters FYI) and we were able to take our numbers from 60/week to 200+ people a week overnight!! heck were even on track for over 400+ member additions this week as i’m writing this on a Wednesday!
my next big task is to stand up a sourcing team in LATAM. my goal is to take my current team members and put them back into the areas where they are the strongest. i have interviews all this week. looking at 8 first-round interviews right now. i’ve never worked with recruiters out of the country but so far my convos have been amazing and what i’m realizing is that south america has SO MUCH GOING ON in the tech industry so excited to dig in more and hire my team!!
