Pivot
So, it’s week 3. My first post was whimsical. My second post was reflective. My third post is sitting on the trash can. Crumpled. I wrote it, I loved it, I edited it, I hated it. Twice.
Did I run out of disputes this week, or chocolate, or single malt scotch? No, there was an abundance of each available. I ran out of pluck. And I decided to come clean.
If I was a group I would call it storming: like our squally Sydney weather!
Storming is where groups feel overwhelmed, uncomfortable, or question the goal, or their ability to deliver and resists like a teen or rumbles without purpose.[See Bruce Tuckman model of groups]
I am not a group although I do like the thought of that as an alternative future identity.
So what would my advice be to me if I were a client?
Stop. Reflect. Where is the resistance coming from?... Touch your goal (101)
Touching the Goal
I came to LinkedIn to experiment with social media and to learn. I have had great feedback and I can see the power of the tool. Success is near.
Resistance
This is new and new is change and CHANGE is HARD. I choke because what drives me when it is hard is not the goal it is the LOSS. The loss of the sense of expertise and ease and pace. This is not automatic and fun, it is thinking slow territory Kahneman.... .
Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
Viktor E. Frankl.
I let go of output in order to reflect and pivot. This may be strategic but it feels like a fail and a broken promise. It feels vulnerable.
Growth? Only time will tell and that is what makes a pivot brave. What a powerful reminder for me why a facilitator and conflict resolution support are such valuable handmaidens to support a pivot in a stall.

5 年Stay with storming. It’s an interesting parallel process for when you begin mediating or shift to a new challenge- getting comfortable with ambivalence and striving for artistry. I’m enjoying reading your insightful posts. ??

5 年I love the idea of the self as a group! ‘Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.’ (Whitman). Might as well own all of them! Heartening read. Keep writing, Shirli.
