Pittsburgh Company Uses Machine Learning to Perform Patent Searches that Increase Patent Value

Pittsburgh, PA – Today, Pittsburgh-based Three10 Consulting, LLC announced the release of GROUNDWORX, a patent search product that uses landscape analysis to identify patent publications that can block issuance of patents to new inventions.

GROUNDWORX uses technology to improve search results and provide a graphical display of the patent landscape. The GROUNDWORX snapshot of the market for the invention and competitive products is an invaluable resource to innovators, patent practitioners and business leaders. By providing information early in the patent process, this product provides the foundation for patent prosecution and a road map for producing high value patents, reducing patent prosecution costs and increasing the value of issued patents.

Innovators can use GROUNDWORX to identify elements of their inventions that are not described in patent publications (“prior art”), but that will have an impact on similar inventions. These key innovations are inherently valuable. Pursuing patents directed to these key innovations will result in high value patents, while reducing patent prosecution costs by avoiding prior art describing related inventions.

GROUNDWORX sorts references identified in a key word search using proprietary algorithms developed by PatSnap, a U.K. start-up that applies big data search and analysis technology to patent searching and displays the results graphically on a landscape map. The references identified describe competing products and give innovators and their patent lawyers, the information necessary to distinguish new inventions from similar competitor products. Patent applications that identify these distinctions have a higher likelihood of passing patent office scrutiny quickly and result in higher value patents.

GROUNDWORX was developed to take the place of “patentability searching.” Traditional patentability involves key word searching of patent and academic literature databases. Key words are taken from the inventor’s description of the invention and results are scored based on the number of times these words are used in the references identified. The results of most patentability searches include many irrelevant references describing unrelated technology and no information relating to competing products. It is nearly impossible to identify distinctions between new inventions and competing products based on the results of traditional patentability, and many patent practitioners opt to skip traditional patentability searching.

About Three10 Consulting

Three10 Consulting launched in October 2017, when founder and chief strategist Curtis Wadsworth, J.D., Ph.D., left “big law” to provide affordable, expert advice to start-ups and small companies by developing patent strategies that increase patent valuation. Three10 uses technology to identify issues that impede investment in start-ups early in the patent process and therefore avoiding later issues. Wadsworth recognized this need in the market while performing due diligence (the process of reviewing patent portfolios before substantial investment) for venture capitalists and large multinational companies and helping numerous biotechnology and chemical start-ups and small businesses prepare for due diligence by these companies.
