As the name suggests, the term Pitra refers to ‘forefather’ and the dosha is associated with negative karma. The term ‘Pitru Dosha’ refers to the negative karmic debts of the ancestors or any wrongdoings committed by an individual against their parents which brings obstacles and troubles in the lives of their descendants. It also occurs when our ancestors are unhappy due to some reasons such as inadequate rituals, disrespect or unfulfilled desires.
According to Indian astrology, it is a very inauspicious aspect and a Pitra Dosh is formed in the horoscope of a person, only if there is a conjunction of Rahu and Sun in the ninth house (also known as the house of father and forefathers) in birth chart.
How to find Pitra dosha in Kundli (Horoscope)?
The Sanskrit word Pitra means father/forefather. According to Hindu Vedic astrology Sun is karaka for the father. If Sun is placed in the 9th house or 9th house is afflicted by malefic Sun, then the birth chart of that person clearly indicates Pitra Dosha. Followings are few more planetary combinations that indicate the Pitra Dosha:

Perform Trapandi Shradh
Shraadh or Pitru Paksha is a period when the Hindu natives offer prayers and offerings to their forefathers for the peace of their soul. But if Shradh is not performed on the death anniversaries of your ancestors, then one should perform Trapandhi Shradh. According to Hindi scriptures, Trapandi Shradh is performed with reciting Pitra Puja mantra in the Ashvin Krishna Paksha. This ritual can be done within 15 days of the Trapandi Shradh period for appeasing forefathers and ancestors. Trapandi Shradh is an effective Vedic ritual to reduce the malefic effects of Pitra Dosha.
