Hi LinkedIn Friends,
I wanted to share this newsletter because the topic I want to discuss keeps coming up. As you may have noticed yourself, in recent years, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) has become a hot topic, especially in the sphere of social media. It seems like everyone, from celebrities to influencers, is claiming to have symptoms, leading to a surge in self-diagnoses. But what exactly is ADHD, and why should we be cautious about jumping to conclusions?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning. While it's crucial to raise awareness about mental health conditions like ADHD, the rise of self-diagnosis on social media platforms has its downsides.
Let's address some common symptoms of ADHD:
Here's where the problem lies: self-diagnosing based on a checklist of symptoms found online or echoed by influencers can lead to many issues.
Firstly, self-diagnosis can be misleading. Many symptoms of ADHD overlap with other mental health conditions or even normal variations in behaviour. Jumping to conclusions without a thorough understanding of oneself can lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety.
Moreover, self-diagnosis may perpetuate misconceptions about ADHD. By reducing a complex neurodevelopmental disorder to a list of traits, we risk oversimplifying and trivialising the experiences of those who genuinely struggle with ADHD.
Additionally, self-diagnosis bypasses the importance of seeking professional help. A healthcare provider, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, is trained to conduct comprehensive assessments, considering various factors like medical history, environmental influences, and co-existing conditions. A proper diagnosis is essential for developing an effective treatment plan tailored to the individual's needs.

So, what's the alternative?
Instead of rushing to label ourselves, let's focus on better understanding ourselves. Take the time to reflect on your behaviours, emotions, and thought patterns. Keep a journal to track your experiences and identify recurring patterns or challenges. Know what triggers you, your symptoms and the habits that you may have developed.?
Engage in open and honest conversations with trusted friends, family members, or mental health professionals. Sharing your experiences can provide valuable insights and support as you navigate your mental health journey.
And most importantly, if you suspect you may have ADHD or any other mental health condition, seek professional guidance. An experienced healthcare provider can offer an accurate diagnosis and guide appropriate treatment options.
While it's natural to seek explanations for our thoughts and behaviours, self-diagnosing ADHD without professional guidance can do more harm than good.
Let's prioritise understanding ourselves better before jumping to conclusions and always remember the importance of seeking professional help when needed.
Please get in touch with me if you do need that professional assessment.?

I am convinced I have ADHD. Its so important not to mix up certain normal human emotions etc and rhink somehow its abnormal.
