"Pitching" the job opening at your Company isn't enough | Your Resume won't get you the job, but it WILL get you this...

"Pitching" the job opening at your Company isn't enough

Ever met someone you immediately felt drawn to (whether professionally, personally, romantically, etc) and you suddenly feel this inclination to start highlighting all the great things about yourself in order to impress them or gain their approval so that they like you or want to get to know more about you?

Most of us have been there - and its USUALLY the same end result: the other party appears bored, finds an excuse to cut the interaction short, etc. Your friends will probably tell you its because you came across as "desperate".

Often times, when recruiting, we take the same approach when speaking with an amazing potential Candidate. We want to impress them, gain their approval, show them how great this job opportunity really is, how amazing our Organization or Client is - and while sometimes it certainly can work, there are often cases where it just doesn't make sense WHY this person would not be excited about this career opportunity!!?!

Now - while depending on how you communicate it, it certainly can be that you presented yourself and your Organization as almost "desperate" which aroused suspicion in the other person.

However I want to argue that its not even about coming across as "desperate" but rather the other party (in this case, the Candidate) thinking: "Why should I care?".

Over the years as a Recruiter, I've come to see that people are most interested in themselves - and rightfully so. The problem isn't that you're not impressing them enough - its that's they're not seeing why it matters to them or how your opportunity is relevant to them or helps them get to where they want to be in their career or life.

So while it certainly is important to provide some sort of "pitch" up front about the job opening at your Organization, the compensation package, etc - beyond that point, you have to get to understanding the Candidate's wants and needs. I assure you most people are very happy to talk about what they themselves want and need in their ideal career opportunity. Gaining a stronger understanding of those wants and needs is what will allow you to highlight what WOULD be of interest to them and relevant at your Organization in this potential career opportunity.

Don't just pitch and leave it at that. Seek to uncover their wants/needs, have a genuine interest in understanding what they seek in their ideal career opportunity and what's missing at their current place of employment. Then hone in on what you offer that can address those pain points potentially.

If you've been following me for some time, you've probably heard me say that even the greatest Resume in the world will only get you a phone call or email of initial interest but that everything else beyond that point is upto you - but through my above post I wanted to point out that this doesn't mean your Resume is NOT important.

Your Resume is in fact extremely important simply due to the fact that it gets you that initial "foot in the door". So don't underestimate its importance and don't take a casual attitude towards it - keep it updated, check for grammatical/spelling errors, and ensure there is a focus on outcomes and results you helped achieve!
