Piping Stress Analysis: Best Practices and Case Studies

Piping Stress Analysis: Best Practices and Case Studies

In this first June edition, we share our latest insights and resources on piping stress analysis, structural assessments, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies.

Recent project insights

Depropanizer Towers with Additional Scaffolding Loads

This case study discusses the analysis performed on three 30m tall depropanizer columns subjected to additional wind loads from temporary scaffolding. Linear elastic buckling analysis, plastic buckling analysis, and stress assessments were conducted to ensure code compliance. Read case study

Stress Analysis of a GRE Firewater Piping System

We performed a stress analysis on a large firewater piping system constructed using Glass Reinforced Epoxy (GRE) pipes. The analysis involved piping stress software CAESAR II and an in-house program to compare computed stresses against allowable limits per ISO 14692 standards. Read case study

Dynamic Stress Analysis of an Unloading Line for Pressure Surge Events

This case study covers the dynamic stress analysis of an unloading line subjected to pressure surges during transient events like valve closures and pump start-ups/shutdowns. Transient modeling software BOSfluids and CAESAR II were used to ensure compliance with EN13480. Read case study

Stress Analysis Review of Critical Fire Water System Sections

A number of critical sections in an already installed fire water system were selected for review to determine if additional interventions were necessary. Piping analysis software CAESAR II was used to identify high-stress regions. Read case study

Stress Assessment of GRP Sea Water Dump and Produced Water Caissons

The stress assessment of two caissons (a sea water dump caisson and a produced water caisson) was performed. The required wall thickness and laminate geometries were calculated using CAESAR II and FE Pipe to ensure conformance with ISO 14692. Read case study
