Have you ever read Wind in the Willows? This is one of my favourite children's books, and the best chapter in my opinion is The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. In that chapter, Otter's child, Portly, goes missing on the river, and Ratty and Mole search for him. They find him on a river with the god Pan playing the panpipes and caring for the child. Mole and Ratty are deeply affected by the music, so much so that the spiritual and supernatural power causes them to convulse in Pan's presence; A moment where two dimensions, supernatural and natural, collide.
Nature on the River
The story is set in the UK, and the animals mentioned in the book, Wind in the Willows, are animals native to the UK countryside. Yet, South Korea, too, has similar animals. In fact, if you venture along the Han River, you may see many of them. In Korea, I remember once seeing raccoon dogs (different to raccoons) on many occasions, as well as deer, pheasant, and snakes (apparently there were an infestation of snakes at the Jamboree in Korea recently). The oddest I have seen was the African Porcupine that somehow ended up roaming the woods of the Nam Mountain in the center of Seoul. Here are some of the animals you could see at Nodeul Island in Seoul.
Cranes
The crane is a very graceful bird which can be seen in much classic Korean art. You can often see them sitting on rocks in the streams and rivers ready to catch fish.
Eagles
The more predatory Korean eagle can also be seen, although not as regularly as storks and cranes.
Mandarin Duck
The Mandarin Duck is more decorative than the ones you see in the UK. Perhaps you can spot these from Nodeul Island with the other duck breeds.

Moles
Just like the character from Wind in the Willows, Korea also has its own type of mole which of course is more difficult to see. However, they are living along the river somewhere, so maybe you'll be lucky to spot them on Nodeul Island.
Otters
As recently as January 2023, otters have been spotted along the Han River. If you go there with a good camera, and excellent camera lenses, you might get some awesome pictures, and while you are there, please check out our Nodeul Island project.
Nodeul Island
Nodeul Island is easily accessible from Nodeul Station and Yongsan Station, and it just a short walk along the Han River Bridge there. Our project there has made a nice photo spot for people's Instagram, and the view at night can be spectacular. For this project, we utilize our L3 Outdoor White and P2/DC. Both of these can be seen on our website www.archion.co.kr, with free access to the brochures, specifications, drawings and IES when you sign in.
