Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to a friend and fellow conspirator, Dr. Sabba Quidwai (https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/sabba-quidwai/), as she led a conversation on visionary leadership and staying human. The level of discourse resonated with me because it comes at a time of accelerated societal change, largely due to the maturation of artificial intelligence. Many scientists describe this era as the greatest articulation of scientific progress in human history. As I think about my students and the future they will inherit, what will I need to consider? How can I leverage to help them succeed at higher levels??
Recently, I was privileged to participate in a session with my friend and colleague, Dr. Sabba Quidwai. She shared her insights on visionary leadership and maintaining our essential humanity. These reflections resonated with me, given our current societal climate, which is undergoing rapid transformation primarily due, in part, to the advancements in artificial intelligence. Many experts across the scientific community regard this era as the pinnacle of scientific progress in human history. When I contemplate the implications of this profound shift for my students and the future they will inherit, it elicits several crucial considerations. I find myself questioning: What factors will demand my students' attention? How might I exploit these technological advancements to enable my students to achieve even greater academic success?
The institution of public education, which I believe is the last bastion of societal development and progress, is in significant flux. It reflects my prediction that the future of public education will be significantly shaped by the ongoing changes, possibly leading to a system vastly different from what we know today. And while anticipated for some time, we never thought it would arrive this rapidly. Its impact on education, already discernible, is destined to deepen and widen.
Artificial intelligence is poised to revolutionize various facets of education, broadening our understanding of learning paradigms and teaching methodologies. Consider the most promising trends that artificial intelligence offers: personalized learning, adaptive learning, the integration of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), and the application of machine learning.
Personalized learning?can be vastly improved through learning platforms powered by artificial intelligence, facilitating individualized instruction based on each student's needs and interests. Consequently, students will have the autonomy to learn at their pace and concentrate on areas where they require more assistance.
Adaptive learning?experiences that adjust to each student's progress are another potential benefit of artificial intelligence. These experiences contribute to more effective and efficient learning, responding to the student's learning curve in real time. The immersive worlds of VR and AR can significantly enhance the learning process by simulating realistic experiences, allowing students to explore various subjects more physically and visually. For instance, a student could explore a historical site or conduct a scientific experiment virtually, making learning more compelling and memorable.
Machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, can be harnessed to analyze student data and identify patterns that inform learning strategies. Educators can adapt their instruction accordingly by revealing a more nuanced understanding of how students learn, leading to improved learning outcomes.
In addition to these specific trends, artificial intelligence can affect broader educational transformations. It can automate administrative tasks, liberating educators to focus more on crucial aspects like teaching and mentoring students. Additionally, artificial intelligence can deliver timely and personalized feedback to students, significantly aiding their learning journey.

However, recognizing the potential of artificial intelligence is just the starting point. As educational leaders, we are responsible for being prepared and responsive to the future of education. We must start by learning about artificial intelligence, understanding its possibilities, and contemplating its potential educational uses. Online courses, webinars, and books are readily available resources to help us deepen our understanding. We, then, need to consider how artificial intelligence can be used to improve learning outcomes. Upon formulating potential applications, we must brainstorm ways to implement these ideas within our respective schools or districts.
Cultivating relationships with professionals in the field of artificial intelligence is critically important. By engaging with those working on applying artificial intelligence to improve education, we can stay abreast of the latest trends and learn from their experiences. Ultimately, educational leaders have a unique opportunity to shape the future of education. By embracing artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, we can work towards creating a more personalized, adaptive, and engaging learning experience for all students.
As Sabba shared, the future of education is replete with potential in the twenty-first century, and artificial intelligence can serve as an impetus for change in ways that serve all students. Artificial intelligence can help revolutionize education, creating a more personalized, adaptive, and engaging learning experience for all students. By embracing emerging technologies, educational leaders will be well-positioned to guide the transformation over the next 15 years. Leaders must ensure that all technologies used within their sphere of influence benefit the whole system and empower every learner to realize their full potential.?
