Pioneering Change Through Esports and Sustainable Development
Introduction
From the vibrant streets of Nairobi to the bustling innovation hubs of Atlanta, my journey has been marked by history, inspiration, and an unyielding drive to create positive change. BARBAH GAMES is more than just an esports company; its mission is to accelerate sustainable development goals (SDGs) through the power of gaming. My life experiences and the values imparted to me by influential figures like Ted Turner, George McKerrow, and my mother have uniquely prepared me to lead this endeavor.
Early Influences
My story begins with Kenya's journey to independence and the influence of two monumental figures: Jomo Kenyatta and Haile Selassie. Kenyatta, Kenya’s first President, known as the "Father of the Nation," played a pivotal role in uniting the country and laying the foundation for its future. His vision for a free and prosperous Kenya was supported by Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, a significant figure in African history who advocated for unity and independence across the continent. Selassie, believed to be the last known lineage of King Solomon and to have sat on Solomon's Throne, symbolized a rich heritage of technological and cultural advancement, inspiring Kenya's aspirations for space exploration in partnerships with Italy and NASA.
Kenya’s journey towards technological advancement began soon after independence. In 1970, Kenya launched its first satellite, the Uhuru Satellite, symbolizing the nation's determination to chart its path in the global arena. This milestone represented Kenya's aspirations to establish itself as a leader in science and technology within Africa and inspired the creation of BARBAH GAMES’ mascot, ASTRO. Depicted as an astronaut in our logo, ASTRO embodies the spirit of exploration, innovation, and the limitless possibilities of the future.
Following Kenyatta’s death in 1978, Daniel arap Moi became President. His presidency was marked by both progress and memorable events, including the frightening experience of the 1982 coup attempt on President Moi, a pivotal moment in Kenya’s history highlighting the political instability of the time.
My Arrival on Earth
I was born on November 27, 1980, in Nairobi, Kenya. Some of my earliest memories are of living in Nairobi, enjoying a childhood filled with fun and adventure. I benefited from a good education provided by some amazing schools and educators and fondly remember the Maziwa ya Nyayo program, which distributed milk in schools. Growing up in a middle-income family, I vividly recall our drives past the State House on my way to school, admiring its lush greenery and impeccably manicured plants on the way to Lavington Primary.
The sense of community in Nairobi was strong. The local Kenyatta Market was a bustling hub, teeming with vibrant colors and the sounds of vendors selling fresh produce. Our home, a modest white-walled house surrounded by lush gardens, was a sanctuary where my parents instilled in me the values of hard work, education, and kindness. My mother’s work for the United Nations and her emphasis on giving back to the community shaped my perspective on life, along with my upbringing in the community we lived in. I remember how she would often talk about the importance of unity and cooperation, and how these values were central to the UN’s mission.
Historical Context and Global Events
The year 1980 was significant not just for me but for the world. The Olympics were boycotted by Western nations due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, leading to heightened tensions during the Cold War. This same year, CNN was born, marking the beginning of a new era in global communication and Ted Turner's efforts to unite humanity.
Inspiration from Ted Turner
Ted Turner, a successful businessman and philanthropist, saw the need to restore the Olympics' spirit of international cooperation and created the Goodwill Games. These games, held from 1986 to 2001, aimed to foster peace and understanding through sports. Turner famously said, "As long as there are games, there will be no need for war."
Turner's creation of CNN revolutionized news broadcasting, providing 24-hour coverage of global events. His passion for sports and belief in their potential to promote peace and understanding led to the establishment of the Goodwill Games, which transcended political boundaries and fostered global unity. His philanthropic efforts, including significant donations to environmental causes and the United Nations, demonstrate his commitment to making the world a better place.
Inspired by Ted Turner’s vision, the Captain Planet and the Planeteers cartoon series was launched in 1990. The show educated children about environmental issues and the importance of taking action to protect the planet. The message of environmental stewardship and collective action resonated deeply with me and influenced my commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
Personal Journey to Entrepreneurship
After my mother’s passing, I moved to Atlanta for education and a fresh start. The transition was challenging, but it opened new opportunities and perspectives. I enrolled in college, pursued a degree in Multimedia Design and Business Management, and found myself in the hospitality industry, working for leaders like Horst Schulze of Ritz Carlton, Pano Karatassos of Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, and Ted Turner and George McKerrow of Ted's Montana Grill.
Working under these leaders taught me the importance of customer service, attention to detail, and operational excellence. The commitment to sustainability and innovation at Ted’s Montana Grill, combined with the mentorship of Turner's business partner George McKerrow, provided me with a unique perspective on business and leadership. George McKerrow’s story of founding LongHorn Steakhouse and later partnering with Ted Turner to create Ted’s Montana Grill inspired me greatly. Their shared vision of sustainability and ethical business practices deeply resonated with me.
Founding BARBAH GAMES
BARBAH GAMES was born out of a mission to accelerate the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We believe that through corporate philanthropic efforts under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, we can accelerate the SDGs. Much like the Goodwill Games, BARBAH GAMES SDG Cup can drive development and resources in Africa, igniting the youthful population to be a force for good. By structuring esports around SDGs, we can use the medium of gaming to achieve sustainable development goals. The United Nations estimates that $2-7 trillion annually will be needed to attain 20% of these goals by 2030.Motivation and Vision

Inspired by the mission to create a company that not only makes money but also creates employment and contributes positively to society, BARBAH GAMES aims to leverage the popularity of esports to promote the SDGs and drive positive social change. Our vision is to create a sustainable and inclusive gaming ecosystem that empowers individuals and communities.
Mission and Goals
Accelerating the United Nations 2030 SDG commitments through corporate philanthropic efforts, BARBAH GAMES focuses on using esports as a platform to raise awareness and drive action towards achieving the SDGs. We partner with corporations, NGOs, and governments to create impactful and measurable initiatives that contribute to sustainable development.
Strategic Approach and Impact
Esports, with its global reach and appeal, provides a unique opportunity to promote SDGs. By integrating SDG themes into esports, BARBAH GAMES aims to create a stable and impactful environment for gamers. We connect esports teams with sponsors interested in supporting SDGs, ensuring financial viability and social impact.
Connecting with Sponsors
BARBAH GAMES acts as a bridge between esports teams and sponsors, ensuring a sustainable financial model. By attracting sponsors interested in promoting SDGs, we mitigate financial risks associated with fluctuating viewership and game popularity. Sponsors see value in the social impact and community engagement aspects, not just viewership metrics.
Diverse Revenue Streams
Incorporating SDG themes allows for diversified revenue streams, such as grants and donations from NGOs and international organizations focused on sustainable development. This diversification can buffer against economic uncertainties and ensure long-term sustainability.
Player Welfare and Longevity
By embedding SDGs into the core mission of esports teams, BARBAH GAMES can promote player welfare and career longevity. Initiatives could include mental health support, educational opportunities, and career development programs that prepare players for life beyond their gaming careers. This approach helps maintain a healthier, more motivated player base, crucial for long-term team success.
Creating a Sustainable Ecosystem
The focus on SDGs means BARBAH GAMES is building a sustainable ecosystem involving continuous support and development for gamers, ensuring they have the tools and resources to succeed both in and out of the gaming world.
Reigniting the Goodwill Games Spirit
Much like the Goodwill Games, BARBAH GAMES SDG Leagues aim to drive development and resources to underserved communities in Africa and the world. By structuring esports around SDGs, we can emulate the Goodwill Games and use gaming to achieve sustainable development goals by 2030.
Joining the Planeteers Club
BARBAH GAMES has proudly signed up as a Planeteer Club member, embracing the slogan "Earth's Mightiest Champions." This aligns with our vision of inspiring the next generation with the values and lessons I learned from watching Captain Planet and working at Ted Turner’s company. By joining the BARBAH GAMES Planeteers Club, youth can transfer this knowledge and become empowered to champion sustainable development in their communities.
Conclusion
Like Ted Turner, I believe in the power of sports, especially esports, to unite humanity. BARBAH GAMES aims to drive the SDGs forward and create a better future for all. The time has never been more opportune to unite the world through esports, providing a platform where every country can participate and ensure basic needs for their citizens.
BARBAH GAMES is laying the groundwork to onboard the next billion gamers to play and participate in the Esports Olympics in 2025 and beyond, serving humanity through esports and inspired by the legacies of the Goodwill Games and Captain Planet. Together, we can accelerate the achievement of the 2030 SDGs and bring about a new age of abundance and equality. Join us in this movement to create a sustainable future for all.
