Pioneering Change in Education

Pioneering Change in Education

Greetings LinkedIn Community,

The ancient Greek proverb, "A society grows great when men and women plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit," beautifully captures the essence of the ambitious journey we are embarking on with the Des Moines Public Schools' Five Year Strategic Plan, particularly our Reimagining Education endeavor.

After almost two years as superintendent, it has become clear that the commitment to fostering a world-class educational system is paramount within the Des Moines community. This commitment not only caters to current students but also prepares the groundwork for future generations yet to enroll.

Tonight’s School Board Meeting Unveils a Bold Vision

We are poised to introduce the outline of the Reimagining Education proposal at tonight's school board meeting, giving you an exclusive preview and addressing common questions about this transformative initiative.

What is Reimagining Education?

Reimagining Education is about transforming how we educate students in Des Moines, positioning DMPS as a destination district for families seeking the best educational experiences and opportunities for their children. This initiative focuses on optimizing district funds, modernizing facilities, and enhancing programs to concentrate resources on student needs and retaining top talent.

Key Aspects of the Initiative:

  • Expanding access to full-day preschool.
  • Redesigning the middle school experience.
  • Developing interest-based Signature Schools.
  • Equipping students for success post-graduation.
  • Enhancing quality activity and athletic programming and facilities.

Current Progress and Future Plans

The initiative has already seen the launch of pilot programs, such as expanding our Montessori program and adjusting grade level configurations to enhance educational continuity. A comprehensive digital literacy program is also underway to foster socio-emotional health among students.

You can explore the detailed proposal at our dedicated website: Reimagining Education.

Next Steps: Engaging the Community

The next phase involves community engagement. We look forward to sharing more details at our State of the Schools event on February 11. Your feedback will be instrumental in refining the proposal before it goes before the School Board for approval.

Invitation to Contribute and Collaborate

This initiative represents an opportunity not just for those within the Des Moines area but for educational leaders everywhere to consider how similar models might be applied in their own districts and communities. We encourage you to join us in rethinking educational paradigms and share your insights on implementing such transformative frameworks.

Empathy in Action

This week’s empathy quote resonates deeply with our mission: "Radical empathy is the audacious and courageous action taken by an individual or group to disrupt existing oppressive and innately marginalizing systems, with the desired outcome of elevating and enriching the lived experiences of those who have been victims of such systems."

Together, we are not just planning for the future; we are actively constructing it through innovative educational practices that promise to uplift every student and educator involved. Thank you for your continued support and engagement as we strive to cultivate bright futures and a sustainable pathway for DMPS.

In solidarity,

I would love to share with you the community model of literacy support we have created to provide high-dosage, daily one-to-one tutoring to struggling readers. We have over 120 community volunteers helping over 200 K-12 students with reading and math by pressing into school classrooms, afterschool programs, and in low-income housing neighborhoods in partnership with our city's gun violence initiative. The results are phenomenal-kids gaining a year of reading growth in 3 months of instruction-middle school kids too.

may I ask, do u ever cross paths with Jeanne Allen ?
