GlobalMindEd 2024 was honored to feature John Echohawk , Executive Director of the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) , as a panelist on the policy track. Echohawk, a prominent advocate for Indigenous rights, shared his insights on diversifying the legal profession alongside a distinguished group of panelists, including Kerry Anakwenze , Vice Chair of the American Bar Association International Law Section of the American Bar Association , L. Song Richardson, J.D. , JD, President of Colorado College , Sherrie L. R. , Assistant Vice President of External Affairs and Deputy Chief of Staff at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund , and Michelle Martinez-Thomas, Denver County Court Judge for the Second Judicial District.
A member of the Pawnee Nation, John Echohawk is a pioneer in the field of Native American law. He was the first Native American graduate of The University of New Mexico School of Law and co-founded NARF in 1970. He has served as the Executive Director of the organization since 1977.
Throughout his career, Echohawk has led numerous landmark legal cases related to tribal sovereignty, water rights, and environmental protection. His tireless efforts have had a profound and lasting impact on Indigenous communities across the United States.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the legal profession and his unwavering commitment to social justice, Echohawk was awarded the prestigious Thurgood Marshall Award by the American Bar Association in 2023 .
