Pinwheels

While traveling this autumn I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph the Lindsay girls while I was in Scotland. Playing in the backyard with these two girls reminded me of pinwheels. The exuberance and energy they radiated as they flitted from one activity to the next, from one toy to the next both competing for my attention and whatever toy the other had…..reminded me of pinwheels. 

Just the hint of a breeze and pinwheels are set into action,  blurring with motion and reflecting color and energy. 

There were some beautiful pictures of the girls at play, hamming for the camera, and creating beautiful memories for their parents. 

Yet my favorite picture from this set was a fleeting moment of stillness caught in the instant before the pinwheel caught the breeze again and rushed off in a blur of childlike enthusiasm. 

It was a pleasure to be reminded as a parent of the joy we take in our children’s boundless enthusiasm, and the memories it creates; but also looking back we create these mental snapshots of brief moments of stillness. I was so excited to look through these photos and realize I had caught just such a moment.
