Upcoming PFCC.Connect Informal Conversation

September 24 from 12:00 - 1:00 pm ET

Join IPFCC for our next Informal Conversation, Better Together: Supporting Family Presence and Participation. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on health systems ability to facilitate family presence and participation. The restrictive “visitation” policies and practices set health systems back and many still struggle with supporting families as essential care partners. We hope the strategies shared in this conversation will help your organization recommit to family presence and participation.

Hospital Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Efforts: Perspectives of Patient and Family Advisors

A new article in Pediatrics, “Hospital Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Efforts: Perspectives of Patient and Family Advisors”, describes findings from focus groups conducted by IPFCC and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center to learn from patient and family advisors (PFAs) from underrepresented communities about how hospitals can recruit diverse PFAs, promote inclusive environments, and advance hospital DEI initiatives. Thanks to support from the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health, this article is open access here .

Apply to Help Advance the Practice of Authentic Community Engagement

Applications are being accepted through September 30th from healthcare organizations in the U.S. that are doing high-quality community engagement (CE) work! With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, selected organizations will be able to highlight their CE work to a national audience, share practices that can support the broader adoption of authentic CE, receive real-time coaching from CE experts, and will be featured in a national webinar series hosted by the Camden Coalition’s National Center for Complex Health and Social Needs. New Self-Assessment Available

IPFCC has developed a new resource, "Personnel Practices to Advance the Practice of Patient- and Family-Centered Care: A Self-Assessment Inventory." It is intended to help Human Resource managers and staff integrate PFCC core concepts into policies, programs, and practices. It is available in the IPFCC Resource Center .

New Roadmap for Engaging Patients and Families in Continuing Education?

Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) developed this "Patient Partner Roadmap: Fostering Meaningful Partnerships in Continuing Education" to support engaging patients, families, and caregivers in the planning and delivery of accredited continuing education for health professionals. Integrating the perspectives of those with lived experience provides context and helps health professionals see beyond the data. The resource provides helpful tools and strategies. Access the Roadmap here .

New NIHR Resource for Community Engagement

In August 2024, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) released "Guiding Principles for Community Engagement and Involvement in Global Health Research." This online resource was developed to help researchers and others strengthen CEI practices and partner with individuals, including those who have been underrepresented and marginalized, throughout the entire research process. Access the resource here .

Shared Access for Care Partners on Online Patient Portals

Patient portals are vital tools for managing health information, providing patients with direct access to medical records, and communicating with healthcare providers. Shared Access, formerly known as Proxy Access, enables a care partner, a trusted family member or friend, to have access to the patient’s portal and can then help in coordinating care and other support for the patient. Healthcare systems’ support, improvement, and communication of their shared access process with patients and care partners will result in better patient care. Recent research about Shared Access and the work of OpenNotes can be found here . Access Coalition for Care Partners’ Shared Access Toolkit resource here .
