Friends, can you imagine going to a GIANT airport (think O’Hare or LAX) and not a single terminal or gate being labeled? That’s kind of what it’s like trying to find your Pins when you’re?not?using Pinterest keywords and including interest tags.
Today I’m telling you all about why you’ll REALLY want to use the right Pinterest keywords and how to find the right keywords.?
Why Find Out What Your Audience is Searching for
Think of keywords as a labeling system that helps Pinterest figure out what you’re sharing so it can get it in front of the people that are already looking for it (we call this relevancy). Using the right Pinterest keywords helps everyone find what they want and get to their final destination.?
Pinterest keywords?are your secret sauce to growing your visibility on Pinterest. Pinterest is a search engine and that means using Pinterest SEO (keywords) is going to help you grow your traffic, improve your Pins and boards showing up in more searching, and higher engagement on Pinterest.?
And, as you’ll soon find out, Pinterest keywords are going to help you with your marketing efforts on other platforms too (more on that soon).?
How to Find Out What Your Audience is Searching for
Step 1: It’s time to research keywords?and I’m going to show you a free, easy way to start.?
First, you want to get into the mind of your ideal customer. This is about becoming the customer and removing ourselves as the business owner. Study your customer. Remember, your audience or customers on Pinterest are early on in their journey - pro tip, early in their journey, they are searching for?benefits.?
Use the keywords your audience is searching for, NOT the words you’re using, one of the BIGGEST mistakes I see business owners making is that they’re speaking “expertise” and not using the language their audience is using. Before you put anything else out there, do your?research. Look for the words your audience is using, not the words or phrases you’re using. Often, we are using more advanced or industry-based language as experts.?
For example, let's look at some questions:?How to make homemade goat milk soap, a T-shirt for a bachelorette party,?easy, quick taffy, how to find more customers.?Pay attention to the autofill suggestions, as well as the category add-ons (these are called tiles) that appear just below the search bar after you’ve hit Enter on your search term (this is only available in some countries). For example, if you’re writing a blog post about chocolate cake, you might also want to use the words “easy”, “from scratch” and “birthday cake” as these are popular added keywords.?
Open a spreadsheet and keep track of the keywords and keyword phrases that are connected to what your blog post or content is about.?
Step 2: Use Pinterest trends and?Pinterest predicts reports.?Pinterest trends show you data on that search plus other common phrases for that term and popular Pins related to that search. Here's what keyword searches look like in the Pinterest Trends tool at the moment...
And here is an example of looking at chocolate cake plus associated terms using Pinterest Trends (I have it set to US audience).?
You can even compare different topics. For example, I am trying to decide how to position my new post about chocolate cake so I am going to compare -?chocolate cake vs easy cake vs valentines desserts.?
We can even do a comparison to see what Pins have ranked for these keywords previously (or until now)
Step 3: Start applying it!?
Start using the keywords you’re finding in your blog, your Pins, your sales pages, and any other content you’re putting out there. This is going to help optimize your content for search engines.?
I hear you saying?“Ok, I get why this is important and I’m ready to get started. What’s next?”. The?next step is to start Pinning with your keywords in mind. So take a look at your most recent Pins and ask yourself?“Am I using the keywords my audience is searching for? Does Pinterest Trends support what I have created? How could I incorporate my keywords better?” OR maybe you want to take a look back at content you previously Pinned and it got no love. Could you update it??
