The pandemic opened our eyes to the benefits of working from home, and who could resist? We could work in our pajamas, have pet coworkers, have a stress-free commute, have snack attacks, have flexible hours, have silent meetings, create our own workspace and much more. Returning to the workplace after a mixed work period has proved difficult and unexpectedly thrilling. Despite my initial misgivings, this experience has also led to several enlightening discoveries. Who knew that the office printer still reigns supreme as the drama queen and that office plants can make such wonderful confidants?
I find that working on-site has a number of advantages that fit my working style:
- Structured Environment: For people who value consistency and familiarity, the set schedule and designated workstation are comforting.
- Face-to-Face Interaction: Although I enjoy my alone time, in-person encounters with clients and coworkers help to build stronger bonds and facilitate easier teamwork. Problems are resolved more quickly, and clearer communication removes misunderstandings that are frequently discovered in emails.
- Work-Life Boundary: It effectively divides my personal and professional domains by assisting in the establishment of distinct boundaries between them.
- Team Engagement: Working on-site gives me the chance to contribute and participate at my own speed by fostering team engagement through face-to-face meetings, brainstorming sessions, and social activities.
- Professional Development: More participatory skill sharing and mentoring, as well as better access to mentors, are advantageous for career success.
- Workplace Resources: Having free snacks, training rooms, and office supplies available can boost output and encourage professional growth. Additionally, working at the office results in lower electricity costs than working from home! (Especially those who can't work in these hot summer days... AC is waving).
The secret to succeeding in this new work environment is ultimately accepting change and striking the correct balance between personal space and office amenities in a hybrid work arrangement.
