Pinktober Campaign - Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Here is my Conclusion: In Pakistan, over 83,000 breast cancer cases are reported annually, leading to about 40,000 deaths. Women should start regular mammograms and physical exams at age 40 to detect cancer early. Promoting breast health awareness is crucial to educate women about early diagnosis and reducing the risk of cancer. This knowledge can also help provide better support for those with the disease and prevent cancer. Breast cancer is a prevalent issue globally, with one million new cases annually, and it's the most common carcinoma in Pakistan, affecting one in nine females.

Men should play essential roles in raising awareness and supporting breast cancer awareness efforts, despite it being a predominantly female-focused cause.

Here are some suggested roles for men in breast cancer awareness:

  1. Education and Information Dissemination
  2. Supportive Family and Friends
  3. Advocate for Early Detection
  4. Social Media and Outreach
  5. Workplace Awareness
  6. Encourage Healthy Lifestyle]

Men's Health: Highlight the fact that breast cancer can also affect men (although it's rare) and encourage men to be aware of potential symptoms and seek medical attention if they have concerns.

By actively participating in breast cancer awareness efforts, men can help raise awareness, support those affected by the disease, and contribute to ongoing research and education in the fight against breast cancer.

What is Breast Cancer

Cells in the body normally divides at a steady and even pace. Human body continuously forms New cells to take the place of old and injured cells. Sometimes, however, when cells divide and multiply rapidly, they form a lump also called a tumor. Nearly 80% of finding on a mammogram are not cancer. They are usually benign tumors, a cyst or some other non-cancerous condition. A tumor is called cancer only when it starts invading nearby tissues and organs and damage them.

?Types of Breast Cancer

Your diagnosis will tell you the name of the condition you have. It is important to remember that most of the lumps will be a benign (non-cancerous) condition.

If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, this may be described as non-invasive, primary or secondary cancer.

·???????? Non-invasive cancers are cancerous changes that are contained within the breast ducts or lobules; for example, Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) or Lobular Carcinoma In Situ (LCIS).

·???????? Primary cancer, also known as invasive cancer, is a tumor that grows outside the ducts and lobules into the surrounding breast tissue.

·???????? Secondary breast cancer, or metastatic breast cancer, is when cells from the breast tumor spread to other parts of the body, starting with the axillary lymph nodes under the armpit, and then form tumors in other locations such as the bone or the brain.

Before deciding on treatment, your doctor will also look at the stage of your cancer – what size it is and how much it has spread, and the grade – how different the cancer cells are from normal breast cells and how fast they are growing.

Risk Factors

  • Gender: Breast cancer occurs nearly 100 times, more often in women than in men.
  • Age: Two out of three women with invasive cancer are diagnosed after the age of 55.
  • Family History: If your mother, sister, father or family member has been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer, you have a higher risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Your risk increases if your relative was diagnosed before the age of 50.
  • Personal Health History: If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer in one breast, you have an increased risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer in the other breast. Also, your risk increases if abnormal breast cells have been detected before (such as atypical hyperplasia, lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).
  • Mensural & Reproductive History: Early menstruation (before age 12), late menopause (after 55), having your first child at an older age, or never given birth, can also increase your risk for breast cancer.
  • Dense Breast Tissue: Having dense breast tissue can increase your risk for breast cancer and make lumps harder to detect. Be sure to ask your physician if you have dense breasts and what the implications of having dense breasts are.
